  1. number youre trying to find = X
  2. one number is 6 more than X, so X+6
  3. the numbers together equal 42, so X + X + 6 = 42

1st number
2x + 6 = 42
2x = 36
x = 18

2nd number
x + 6 = 18 + 6 = 24

Or you can put in a y like EmbraceofDeath did. Either way will work if you just remember that the second number is the unknown number + 6.
