Newsome was speaking outside Carmine's - an Italian restaurant on Manhattan's Upper West Side - where three black women from Texas were arrested for attacking a hostess after members of their group were refused entry because they did not have proof of vaccination.

Newsome joined a protest of 40 people outside Carmine's, where she stated: '72 percent of black people in this city from ages 18 to 44 are unvaccinated,' she declared.

'So what is going to stop the Gestapo, I mean the NYPD, from rounding up black people, from snatching them off the train, off the bus? ... The vaccination passport is not a free passport to racism.'

The law disproportionately effects black people, since they are vaccinated at a way lower rate than white people. This is called systemic racism.

Theres nothing racist about the vaccines right now. Theyre entirely free, and incredibly accessible. Zero excuse for people to get vaccinated, unless they have some disorder preventing them.

Cases like this are part of the reason why I advocate we not yell and scream at the unvaccinated and try to be patient with them. The political discourse in this country has been absolute garbage for many years now and vaccination status is a very significant part of that.

The reality is that you can have mandates. You can have passports. Then another unknown percentage of the population either needs to be properly incentivized (passports, mandates, or $$$) or convinced of the benefits of the vaccine.

People aren't exactly wrong to not blindly trust authority in general. Granted, this is a case where they are definitely wrong to not trust authority figures. It can be tricky to tell people to think for themselves, bit also there is no amount of personal research you can do to truly understand how and why this vaccine works especially compared to the effects of covid without the vaccine.

I mean, you can trust the conclusions that experts are communicating, but you will never understand the fine details of how scientists reached their conclusions.

The reality of the vaccine is you need some trust in the authorities to be willing to take it

Being anti-vaccine is more of symptom of lack of education than race, religion, or political affiliation. Because America has ignored the dire state of black communities for nearly all its existence, they have had poor exposure to proper education at a much higher rate than more established white communities. Which leads to a higher number among them falling into anti-vaccine fallacies. The same can said for poor rural parts of America like Alabama and places like that.

This wasn't always true. Vaccines have been freely available at Walmarts since maybe June or so. Even then, a lot of neighborhoods (poor ones) don't have nearly as many vaccination centers. Then people who are poor in general are less likely to get vaccinated due to transportation and other logistical reasons like being unable to potentially take time off work to get vaccinated and suffer possible side effects from the shot.

Honestly, it is really sad seeing people act so dismissive of the unvaccinated especially in regards to poor people.

There still are systemic reasons that make getting vaccinated more difficult if you are poor.

I agree that there is nothing racist about the vaccines, but this is more about poor people not having the same level of access and a high amount of overlap between poor people and minorities.

This. Has anyone been to a deeply poor AND rural area before? They don't look a whole lot better than the South Side of Chicago.

There's got to be statistics on education level and vaccination rates.
