Golden State Warriors forward Andrew Wiggins is still not vaccinated against COVID-19, according to reports, jeopardizing his availability with the Dubs this season.

On Friday, the NBA officially denied Wiggins request to get a religious exemption for the COVID vaccine, according to ESPN.

The full statement from the league reads:

The NBA has reviewed and denied Andrew Wiggins request for religious exemption from the San Francisco Department of Public Heaths order requiring COVID-19 vaccination for all participants age 12 and older at large indoor events. Wiggins will not be able to play in Warriors home games until he fulfills the citys vaccination requirements.

Wiggins, 26, has previously stated he wont get the vaccine unless he is forced to.
And now, with season less than a month away there are concerns about where Wiggins, the teams second-leading scorer last season, stands with Golden State.

Earlier this month, the NBA announced players whose organization has local COVID-19 requirements will not be allowed inside arenas or facilities unless theres approved medical or religious exemption.
This impacts teams in San Francisco and New York City where both cities have passed laws requiring COVID-19 vaccination.

So, players on the Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets who are not vaccinated will not be allowed to play in home games.

If Wiggins holds his ground and remains firm with his decision to not get vaccinated, he wont be able to play in any Warriors games at Chase Center this season.

The Warriors have not commented on Wiggins situation as of Wednesday night.
KRON4 reached out to the San Francisco Department of Public Health for comment but has not yet heard back.

Luckily, only a small number of religions by number of adherents actually qualify for exemptions, and even then blockage from entering private arenas would still be allowed. So, most wouldn't qualify, and even those that qualify wouldn't be able to play in certain places anyway.

If they voluntarily sit out they either wont be paid, or if its guaranteed money then the team can fine them for every game missed. This will be interesting because Wiggins and whoever else pretty much are voluntarily sitting out these home games. Id keep him on the team, fine him for missed home games and wouldnt play him on the road, and just have him waste a year. Maybe hell learn at some point.

Why does this only apply to the home teams?

My guess is that neither city felt they had the legal authority to enforce it that way.

The NBA has strict protocols in place regarding unvaccinated players traveling on the road anyways.

2. Breakthrough cases, while rare, still happen.
