It isn't if you live by your means. That's like a grand saved up every month with budgeting but the point is, landlords don't respect regular working people to rent their shitboxes or closets.

You may be able to get into a "low income" set-aside, especially if you've got kids.

in my area, cost of living is so high that if you're not pulling in at least a comfortable $60k/year, you're basically forced to have roommates or to live with extended family

My 700 sqft single bedroom apartment is $1434/mo before utilities

If your credit is any good at all, just look into an older house in some forgotten suburb.
My mortgage + escrow is about $530.

I kinda don't fall in the low income demographic either unfortunately, in addition to having all the premium living benefits as a fed employee which don't reflect my take home pay.

Middle-class abyss, huh?
Too "rich" to qualify for anything, too "poor" to afford anything.

Some places you literally just can't spend less. That's about right for my area. Anything less than that is crackhead alley, some places.

Central Philadelphia is like that. The unwritten gentrification rules state you must be poor af to get housing or rich af to live on your own.

1200 a month rent @ 50k is on-par with where i live. I mean, a lot of people should be so lucky. I used to know people earning 36k a year and paying 1500/mo in rent+utils. why? because thats what the market rate was for the inner city, and a lot of service jobs pay shit wages.
