I made miso soup using this and a good recipe I found online. Following the online instructions, my whole house smelled like fish. So I think these bonito flakes may be stronger than most. I need to know how much of this stuff I'm supposed to add and exactly how to make the broth

I guess I'd have to buy a kitchen scale to use those directions. Or just add half the amount as last time.

The soup was good af tho and didn't smell as bad after the miso paste. I just got a complaint something along the lines of, "What the fuck is that smell?"

Maybe I'm tired but looking at this has me tripping on how the Japanese written word must work.

Imagine how long it takes to write something when you draw all those little houses with lines and shit

When you practice it from early childhood it goes by quickly. Heck, because you memorize kanji and other phonetic words, you have a lot harder time spelling words wrong.

Yeah but looking at some of those characters or whatever, it's like making an intricate drawing just to say one word. Or one letter, I'm not sure how it works. Seems like it would be more time consuming than using western letters.

Nah. It's way more efficient. Like, way more. Especially with how short make strokes are.

Maybe, I just can't comprehend it at this point. Look at that hierographic second from the left in the top right of the pic.

I guarantee you I could write any English word faster than they can create that. That better mean a whole sentence.

  1. Bring 3 cups (600cc) of water to a boil, add 15g of bonito shavings.
  2. When the water comes to a boiling point again, the bonito will rise to the surface, turn off the heat until the bonito sinks.
  3. Strain through a cloth or a fine strainer. After that, it's ready to serve.

I know what I did wrong now. I let it boil for like a minute before turning off the heat. Probably extracted too much umami or whatever.

I did the kombu (dried kelp) right I think. Didn't let that come to a complete boil.
