I wonder if the stories are related. Dad goes to jail because he used the family pet Jeepers to murder his brother, and then his wife files for divorce as a result.

Or Dad was doing something unnatural with Jeepers, gets caught by his wife who turns him in to the police and then files for divorce, and his twin brother Joe ends up killing himself because he can't take the strain.

They're all different animals so I doubt the same character is doing all that

I figured the same. But in some children's book, they make animal of different species related. Usually cousins or whatever. That said, that would still mean different families each story...
