and Trumble yeah... for me there was always that "it's more than just me" element. I was never opposed, I just didn't really care until it became real to me, and I struggle with that and I am thankful that all it really took was the news, and not a serious issue with someone close to me getting sick or worse getting sick from me. That would be... fucking devastating. There have been contentious arguments in my family but they have been arguments where everyone has their heads in the right place. No anti-vax, no bullshit... just "how careful is too careful vs. how careful is just right careful?" arguments... and I am glad that even though not everyone is on the same page, everyone is on a page that is... for lack of better phrasing, not completely fucking stupid... based in reality, not fucking fake news, not fucking bullshit.

These past few years have been tough enough. I don't want to think of how they would have been if I had that to deal with...

For me it was easy because I lived near the first US outbreak and my company sent us home as soon as it started to spread. I did hear people saying stuff like it's just a cold, black people can't get it, stupid shit like that.

Yeah, I get that. Some would probably criticize me for the fact that I haven't had my second dose yet despite the fact that I could get it - but ultimately, while the minimum gap is 3 weeks, our government's advice keeps shifting back and forwards as to whether 3 or 6 is optimal, while international research suggests 8 (which is what I've actually gone with).

3 more weeks and I'm fully vaccinated and don't have to think about it until (hopefully single shot) booster time.

Politics and all aside, it's hard to hate on a parent because of their beliefs. Easy to hate on people we don't really know.

It can't be lack of education. This stuff has been all over the news and discussed to death for a long time.

Yeah, this sucks. My dad is 71 and works in NYC every day. Refuses to get the vaccine.

I try not to talk about it when I see him because it's the only time we've ever fought, but I'm beyond "worrying" about it. I've tried several times to convince him, but it's his stupid decision and I refuse to bother myself over it.

There's actually a name for it - the Nirvana Fallacy. It's very common with anti-vaxxers. Using the argument that if something isn't 100% safe, it cannot be mandated. The problem obviously being that literally nothing is 100% safe, including eating. Vaccines have such a good safety profile, anti-factors basically have to perform incredible mental gymnastics to explain why they think they are so dangerous. My favorite being that literally every vaers submission counts as a death, but only 10% of deaths are reported, so there are 10 times as many deaths. It's absolutely goofy as hell. The vast majority of deaths reported to vaers have nothing to do with the vaccine other than temporal proximity. Something like one out of six deaths are literally trauma.

I literally had a patient tell me that he suspected at least 1 billion people had died from the vaccine. I told him we would probably notice if one out of seven people in the entire world dropped dead, and it would be rather confusing at the vaccine killed more people than even received it.

What was his response?
