selective tone deafness.

it was hilarious, insightful and offensive all at the same time. I was more "offended" by cherry picking of when to see nuance and when to be obtuse, but the content itself was funny AF.

and this is one of the last Chappelle topics related to this special I'll be posting in. it's redundant.

Agree with this. He knew the line and he stepped over it for the sake of a joke.

Daphne was in awe of Daves graciousness, Dormans sister Becky wrote to the Daily Beast. She did not find his jokes rude, crude, off-coloring, off-putting, anything. She thought his jokes were funny. Daphne understood humor and comedyshe was not offended. Why would her family be offended?

Dave loved my sister and is an LGBTQ ally, Dormans younger sister Brandy added. His entire set was begging to end this very situation.

Weird how no one on the it was offensive side wants to talk about what happened to Daphne and the dragging that people did to her for defending Dave. They only want to talk about Dave but not an actual trans comedian that loved his comedy and was dragged for defending him and then killed herself a week later. As Dave basically said, Im not 100% blaming the dragging for what drove Daphne to kill herself, but it sure as hell didnt help.

Im black myself, and I found it hilarious. That said, I wouldnt judge someone that found it offensive.

Admittedly, a select few jokes made me uncomfortable, but then again wasnt that the whole point?

Also the Daphne story at the end had me tearing up a bit.

It definitely felt like he had it out for trans people. People say he is an equal opportunity offender. But other than one joke about Jews and a small set about feminists, it was primarily just trans people jokes. Whether that is offensive or not is up to the individual, but in my opinion it felt like some of it wasn't a joke, just a rant about trans people.

I thought it was a huge step down comedically for Dave. It's the first one I don't feel like I'll actually go back to. The impossible pussy joke was funny tho. It almost made me forget how terrible and hacky "punched in the aids" was. Also, sticking to one topic for 3/4ths of your special is always a bad route regardless of if it's an offensive topic or not. I don't want to hear Chappelle talk about the trans community for 45 minutes like I don't want to listen to Jim Gaffigan talk about food for a whole special. The horse it dead, please stop.

Your poll options suck cause you don't actually care if it was good or not, you're just playing into the drama stuff like everyone else.

Id say he went pretty hard on women too. At least in the first half. Also white folk, but again more so in the first half.

sorta like a mix between all out funny like his "stand"-up specials and his more introspective "sit-down" special.

he definitely hits most of the right notes which i'm sure most "it's offensive" people will miss.

If you say so.

I also would like to point out that the whole Dapne story is essentially saying "See, I had a Tran friend. She was one the good ones. You guys should be more like this one specific person in the community that likes me" lol. It's anecdotal and completely writes off the entire communities views because one woman was easy going, confident and into comedy.

Which it can be just a joke. Until people start using it as ammunition against the rest of the Trans community to be "more like her, the good one".

Doesn't that sound familiar? Like something one race has used another race for in the same exact way? Pointing out the more anecdotal "good ones" because they supported with their views.

Id like to see someone here dispute this perspective. Because Id love to know if I'm wrong so I can update my own perspective.

Btw. Im not for cancelling or taking the show down. I don't think having these discussions are inherently bad and these are usually the things that spark them. I also never even had a glimmer of thought that Dave as a person has malicious intent towards the Trans community. I just think he's fallen into his own ignorance. Which, these are comedians. They all say ignorant shit they only know little about. It's our fault for trying to make them out to be more than that as a whole. But they are.

I don't know. I am not trans so I can' say i was offensive. But I would say that with compare Dave to people like John Gruden. We know that Gruden really wanted to hurt people because of who they were. Like Raiders cut a black Punter for seemingly no reason.

Yes. It actually cheapens him more being friendly to her at the time and giving her a shot at her dream. Though could of been genuine at the time and probably was. Because now it's just used as a "look how great I am and supportive I am to Trans peo...person.". Can't say people, since it's literally only one person.

And I'm not sayimg he didn't have the right to tell the story, apparently her family was fine with it and as someone who respects comedy, I believe him when he says she wouldn't of mind either. Bit that just makes her and her family good people. It doesn't make Dave a good guy for shoving it at the end of a special dedicated almost solely to taunting the trans community to show how he couldn't possibly be ignorant on the subject, he once had a trans friend.

"a ratio of critic to audience score like that always means the film or whatever is straight up unwatchable garbage honestly Organically good films rarely get up in the high 90s in audience score outside of cinematic masterpieces, and Dave Chappelle has never appeared in one."

The fuck does this mean? That's such a bullshit thing to say. Nobody gives a single fuck what critics say about movies anymore. Their low scores mean absolutely nothing to the general audiences anymore.

I personally saw the focus being tribalism. I didnt see him using her as a token friend nearly as much as a casualty going against the grain.

it all feeds back to the black slave owner from earlier imo which he subtly uses as a foil.

but thats just how I see it.

The anti-gay/trans was too much at this point. I didn't feel it was as developed or innocuous a point as the other specials, as a die hard Chapelle and stand up fan. It was oddly divisive... I watch his other specials regularly and his points weren't as strong this time. It seemed like he was using his status as a minority to fuck with the LGBTQ community.

I think black people are first in line in this country for justice and need, but this felt like punching down. Native Americans got fucked way harder by history, but there is such a present need in the black community they've got my vote.

I enjoyed it overall. Talking primarily about LGBTQ stuff for an hour was a little odd, but with previous controversies in that area, maybe not that odd after all. There were a few jokes in there that seemed mostly for silly shock value (see: Space Jews), a few that seemed deliberately mean-spirited to play on others' labels of him (one part toward the end where Dave says "...and then I pushed violently him off me, because I'm transphobic!" or something, even though it was in the middle of a bit giving the exact opposite effect), and a few that were slightly undercooked. Although I'm in the "comedy shouldn't have sacred cows" camp, some of the writing could've been refined a bit.

Honestly, it'd be interesting to see a trans comedian take Dave to task in his own element: stand-up comedy. In the meantime, I don't think enlisting advocates, hosting Twitterstorms, etc. will do much, other than get even more people to watch the special.
