so was my dad

he calls MLK, Jr. Day "James Earl Ray Day"

yeah

But MLK day marks MLK's birthday, not his murder...so that doesn't even make sense

Like the whole Civil Rights era really wasn't that long ago

I tell people this whenever the subject comes up. The fact Jim Crow, lynchings, & fountains don't exist anymore make people think it was WAY longer than it actually was, & underestimate how much the effects of those times still linger.

I was in my mamas belly.

Adolescence was pure 70s. My teenage years began and ended in the 80s.

i remember seeing a middle-aged black woman wearing an obama t-shirt and realizing she must have gone to a segregated grade school (if not also high school).
what a country we live in.

My great grandmother was a teacher when schools were segregated. She always came off as the sweet little old Christian lady but told me one day desegregation was the worst thing to happen in schools. She didn't really explain and was close to 100 at the time so I didn't push it. I was just kind of shocked that she'd say something like that out of the blue.

My go-to bit of perspective on that is that it was so recent that the Tuskegee study was made public between the time Joe Biden was first elected to the Senate and took office.
