Ambitious and unafraid to get weird and trippy, with one of the best all time villains gaming. There were a ton of games that year that tackled the player's relationship with violence: Walking Dead, Spec Ops: The Line, Hotline Miami, Dishonored, Max Payne 3, Hitman Absolution, Sleeping Dogs, The Cat Lady. Few brought that narrative to a mainstream stage as much as Far Cry 3 did. I guess I'm in the minority here because I really like the meta aspects of it. It's for sure messy and not always the best executed, but at least it's interesting and adds a layer to a game you would never expect that from (at least, I didn't). A big minus for me are forgettable side characters which occasionally diminish the impact you should be feeling as Brody as you go through your violent transformation.

First half builds up the charismatic villain Vass and then he gets unceremoniously killed off, the replacement villain is rather forgettable, and also it goes into some racist white saviour tropes. The bad ending is frankly vile and I wont describe it here though you can look it up if you dare while the good ending is just really silly.

So yeah it squanders all its build up and gets problematic in its viewpoint to say the least.

Yeah, I'm with the rest of you. The story absolutely nails it at first. The exposition to the island and its culture is all pretty great. It makes you legit fear the bad guys and wonder who's gonna die.

Then it starts squandering its potential, with killing Vaas so prematurely and having a whiny, douchey protag who treats his clear keeper of a girlfriend (Liza) terribly and wants to leave her for Citra, who's openly using him. I agree that the bad ending is disgusting and I didn't even want to watch it (still don't). The good ending wasn't memorable, though I actually cheered Citra sacrificing herself. I don't think that was what was how one was supposed to react, but I felt her to be as much of a villain as whats-his-name was.

If it weren't for the excellent first third of the game, my score would be considerably lower. The game's forgettable cast on the whole (Vaas is by far the best character, though Liza is good and Daisy and Brody aren't forgettable like the rest of them).
