Did the parents try to turn him into a nursery rhyme to control their children & get everyone to sleep?

Is that why he became a dream monster?

I'm not sure if the movies have an in-story origin for that rhyme.

Could A Nightmare on Elm Street get made today? I know they tried a remake a few years ago but I'm saying if they started it for the first time. I don't think they could. Or at the very least they'd have to change the premise and kill college kids instead.

They could easily update the series so long as Freddie isn't a pedophile.

For six films, they meticulously dodged any implication of sexual molestation -- then A Nightmare on Elm Street changed companies. It was implied in Freddy vs Jason and the main focal point of the remake.

The remake should have made Freddy innocent as a twist. I don't like when unnecessary remakes don't try anything new.

Strangeland came out 15 years after Nightmare on Elm Street and the premise is similar with the main antagonist outright being found not guilty by reason of insanity. I mean it's still more than 20 years ago but nobody really said anything back then and I don't see why that would change now.

The first movie deliberately avoided making Freddy a pedophile because child molestation headlines were in the news and they didn't want to be seen as exploiting that. That's why he's described a "dirty child killer" and not a child molester. The sequels followed suit and avoided any direct mention.

I never saw the TV series, but I'll take your word for it that it's openly stated.

On a side note, as the film series went on, it was revealed that (BIG SPOILERS for anyone who hasn't watched the series but might) Freddy's mother was a nun who was raped while volunteering at an asylum. Robert Englund had an out-of-makeup cameo role as Freddy's father. So he did still still play a rapist regardless whether or not Freddy himself was one.
