It is.

It's a short play-through, but it's great if you want to kill 20 minutes.

I got the itch to play this a few months ago for the first time in over two decades, and was saddened to find that, out of all my collection, both SML 1 and 2 had somehow gotten lost. T'was a bummer.

The game in which Mario saved notEgypt, piloted a submarine for 1/12 of the game, and which acted as the origin of Daisy (who everyone remembers for some reason) and Tatanga (you should be grateful to reach Spirit status in Smash Bros you loser).

Mario's "biggest adventure yet" is a 12-level romp that can be beaten in less than an hour (maybe even half an hour).

I can appreciate it for what it is due to the time it came out, but Land 2 was such an improvement that it's probably up there with Street Fighter 2 and Kirby's Adventure as "Most Improved Video Game Sequels".

Also Tatanga needs to return.

It's pretty good, but it's not that memorable, and I say this with it being I think the first video game I ever owned.

Super Mario Land 2, now that's a fucking star game. Gave us fucking Wario in addition to being the shit.

Incidentally, Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land, now there's a fucking ace game that Nintendo is trying to make us forget.

I had a lot of fun with that one growing up. Also, koopas leave bombs instead of shells (lol) and instead of fireball, there is superball which bounces 90 degrees... and had a neat gimmick where it would collect coins it hit, so many were placed out of reach just for that purpose (including rooms literally filled entirely with coins). That Easter Island boss was stressful as fuck too.

It's pretty bad. It's crazy how much of a big upgrade 2 was on the same hardware. It's amazing how much getting used to programming can open up potential.

I wonder how the GB pulled off that game. It's more like a SNES game than anything else!

It was definitely a much better made game but didn't have the same charm as the original imo. I did enjoy looking for the hidden exits though and it was always fun to discover what would change on the map screen. The space one took me the longest to find (I didn't have any sort of guide so I just searched the shit out of every single level)

I can see what you're saying.

The SML1 goombas will always make me laugh my ass off though:

apparently they're not goombas, they're their own thing called goombo, lmao:

huh. I was not aware that they were a separate entity. I always liked those jiang shi zombie-ish things in world 4. pixel-wise, they looked better than most other enemies in the game.

Yeah, and you probably know this, but the "Koopas" are different as well. They only explode after jumped on because the devs couldn't program in the ricochet effect for the shells into the Game Boy at the time. It's a similar reason for why Mario shoots Super Balls instead of fireballs when getting the flower power-up.

He did return in SML2 at least, unlike Daisy

Darn right.

I like Land - I have very fond memories of getting it for Christmas with my GB when I was 8 and just rinsing through the AA batteries.

It's very short, and the scrolling shooter levels were a bit of an odd change of pace, but I think that it does really well in having its own feel, and the worlds do feel very varied (although 2-1 and 2-2 are pretty darn similar)
