The NFL OT rule is too biased towards the team who wins the coin flip, even with the format change a few years back. I don't know if college is the perfect solution, but it's better.

My personal thoughts on this are quite complicated, honestly.

I hated the NFL's former format of even allowing a team to win if they had scored a FG. It meant the winner came down to sheer dumb luck - whoever won the coin toss would win the game. The rule change improved things dramatically. It's fairer and puts some stock in defense, even if it still favors the coin toss winner. It's just no longer 100%.

The college rules are a little more complicated now that they change for the first three periods. And this PSU/Illinois game showed that the 2-point conversion thing doesn't necessarily make the game any less tiring for either the players or the viewers. It went from thrilling to boring in a quick span of time. However, each team gets the same cards dealt to them, and it's thus fairer.

Basically, there are pros and cons each way. If you'd asked me a few years ago, I'd have said college without hesitation, so I still lean that way.

Playoffs are the one time you actually need a way to break ties, but for the regular season? Just call it a draw.

Knowing the score needed to win means that both teams don't really have the same hand dealt to them. I don't know that it's really possible to make things 100% even in an OT scenario with an acceptable contest that's recognizable as football (also while still being designed to end the game), but even when the NFL was true sudden death, the coin toss winners only won like 55% of the time or something. Though it's also fair to point out that includes a large period of time where defense was allowed and field position mattered more.

I've always hated college OT, but if they're just going to put both teams in scoring position to start OT, I'd rather they just have a shootout between kickers to be more entertaining.

The new college rules make a long overtime game lame now, but generally I prefer it to the NFL format, especially with it just being ten minutes now.

Each team gets one possession until the tie is broken. Keep kickoffs.

In regular season, no score after each time had a possession once is a draw.

Regular season - tie

Playoffs - just keep adding ~10 minute periods until someone wins (not sudden death) Basically like the NBA

College. I think they could have left the rules as-is but Penn St/Illinois was really fun.
