Surprised no one have said getting beaten half to death by baseball bats and then buried alive yet.

I remember being terrified when I was 6, sitting in the theater for Nightmare on Elm Street Dream Warriors, when the vein puppetry scene happened.

Interesting how everyone is jumping straight to horror movies.

Easily the hardest to watch death(s) was in The Pianist:

When the Nazis pulled random Jews out of a line, made them lay face down, and then shot them in the back of the head, one by one

also from that movie:

The Nazis raiding a Jew's apartment and throwing an old man in a wheelchair off a balcony

Wind River

Its not even that they explicitly show a brutal death, its just the feeling you get when everything is revealed, knowing the context around it, is complete dread and despair.

Deep Red (1975) - Dragged by a truck for miles, struck in the head by curb, run over by another vehicle.
Sal, or the 120 Days of Sodom (1975) - Final massacre.
Cruising (1980) - Hogtied nude, stabbed to death.
The Mist (2007) - Used as birthing vessel for spider monsters.
Martyrs (2008) - Insect bitch clawing her skin off before getting splattered with a shotgun & the main character getting flayed at the end.
Bone Tomahawk (2015) - Split in half.

Might think of more later

Yep. Even the director's followup Brawl in Cell Block 99 had way more violent and gruesome gore but didn't reach that level of horrific awe of that one scene because Kurt Russell's reaction sold it.

Gore quality/style + onlooker performance is always the key to a true horror death scene.

Another one I just remembered

Red White & Blue
Dude gets flayed. The skin from his neck and entire head gets pulled off his head. Been a while since Ive seen it, but I know it showed part of it onscreen, but not necessarily the whole thing.

There are a couple gnarly ones in the 89s blob. People getting disolved or being bent in half from the front.

Or the insect pit in Peter Jackson's King Kong.

The one that sticks with me is from this shitty movie Wolf Creek about a serial killer in the Australian outback. Dude cuts a girl in the spine and paralyzes her and for some reason that one makes my skin crawl every time I think about it.

That one sticks with me too. I don't even like the movie all that much due to how unpleasant it was and that it was inspired by a real serial killer in Australia.
