If that doesn't happen, the right seems to be radicalizing itself more and more anyway so that won't end well. There will never be anything with great armies occupying cities or vast swathes of countryside. Not that either side is likely to publicly do that... well, technically elected democrats were calling for the electoral college to overturn Trump's victory in 2016 (which is a very public example) although even if there were enough faithless electors for that, the changed result still probably wouldn't count. Honestly, after the things that happened during the Obama regime -- including mass surveillance, the torture of a whistleblower, affirming the right of the president to authorize drone strikes on American citizens, raiding news offices, greatly curtailing the power of the press, etc -- there was a moment when it felt like the country could have slid into a totalitarian state.
