But home was worse, so what are ya' gonna do? Actually, running away isn't the right way to put it. My parents failed and I got hurt for years because of it. And when I took a turn for the worse mentally and with my behavior, they called me bad and threw me away. They'd pass me around, "I don't want him, you take him" That was when I left for good. I just turned 14...thereabouts. I posted up in an abandoned restaurant just a mile or so from home at the beginning. But then it got cold and wet out, so I bounced. Thus began a 25 year love affair with hitchhiking and I've got thousands and thousands of miles under my belt. It took many years before my relationship with my parents healed. I harbor ancient hurt and rage, but I don't make my father pay for it. My mother died a long time ago, but we had a much needed coversation shortly before so that old hurt turned to compassion. With my dad, he turned extremely sensitive later in life. His regret is on his face all the time, so compassion again. Because of who I became because of all the abuse I suffered through, I also did terrible things I can't take back. I just feel sadness for my dad and his guilt. Anyway, yeah. I was homeless during most of my young teenage years until 17 when my mom signed a slip of paper for me to join the Army. I was a broken mess and the Army didn't fix me. I got out a few years later then almost killed someone in a fight when I lost control and raged out. That changed me a lot by making me afraid of my own capacity for violence and my seeming inability to control it. It's kinda amazing. Started out with such a shitty hand and kept playing it for the next 25 years, then I just couldn't take it anymore and did my best to adapt to a more 'normal' life. Now I live earning more than I need and still live like I might need to leave with my backpack at any minute. I'm not happy. My childhood broke me for life...and I dunno how to fix my broken mind.
