Yeah, was a game changer.

Then Blu-Ray came out and it's like... what's the point?

I remember wanting the PS2 so bad and finally getting it. First DVD was the replacements I believe. Still a great movie. The case sucked though and the DVD could come lose and scratch up.

I wonder why that vhs tape in the ring wasnt a dvd or maybe it was revamped in sequels, I cant remember.
speaking of the ring, member when you could press left or something at the title screen and watch theyknow.

VHS was still viable into the early 2000's. They were still producing VHS editions of new movie releases into the middle part of the decade.

Also DVD players were expensive as hell before PS2.

Yes, and the DVD players were expensive. The PS2 was cheaper than a lot of them iirc, so people were buying that.

IIRC, the original movie had a thing where you could save yourself by copying the video and showing it to someone else. Back then, I don't think most people would even begin to know how to do that with a DVD.

I didn't have a lot of DVDs as a kid, but my aunt had a pretty big collection. I remember watching Shrek all the time and playing with the special features.
