People are getting too hung up on the numbers. Imagine theres 6 people and the bill is $300 instead of $600 if that suits you more. The question is about the premise, not those exact numbers.

Anyway, to answer the question, I'm only paying my (and my wife's) share unless theres only a small difference between my share and an even split

Usually, everyone tends to order something within a few dollars of each other, so it's easer to just say "The bill is $120 with tip, there's 5 of us, everyone throw in $25" as opposed to saying "You owe $22, you owe $26, you owe $27, you owe, $30, you owe $20."

Then everyone has to run tot he bar to make change, count it all up, etc.

Are you typically paying with cash? I can't remember the last time I went out to eat and everyone didn't pay with their phones or contactless cards.

No. usually we'll all throw a debit card on the table and ask the server to split it evenly between the cards.

Seems easier than telling her "OK, put $27 dollars on this card, $22 on this one" etc, etc.

I tend to go out with the same 3-4 couples, so it's kinda understood that unless someone orders something grossly more expensive than the rest of us, we split the bill evenly.

Separate checks at group meals, always. I'll pick up an appetizer on my bill if I share in any that was ordered, but that's it.

Before, when it wasn't common for restaurants to give each person their own bill, it usually was easier to just split it evenly rather than calculate the exact amount your food + drink + tax came out to.

Now though, it's so easy to pay separate, I don't see a reason not to do it that way.

I'm thinking that's why my go-to is to just split it.

I'm and old head, and the idea of expecting the server to print up 5 (or more) different bills seems like a rude inconvenience to put them in (in my opinion).

It depends who I'm with and what people had.

If I know that somebody I'm with isn't as comfortable financially and deliberately went for a cheap pasta dish while I ordered something more expensive, I'm not going to expect them to split it evenly. Same sort of thing for drinks. If I've had a lot to drink I wouldn't expect a designated driver to split evenly either.

However, things like this aren't that common for me, so more often than not we just split evenly.

Ehh, not really when you consider this is CE.

Id split it evenly $100 each and then do what you want for the tip. 6 people, $600 bill, itd be a pretty good assumption everyone ordered around $100 worth of stuff so breaking it down evenly just makes sense. If someone happened to only order like $25 worth of stuff, Im more than certain that person would have already told the server they want their own bill.

If the amounts were roughly even, an even split would work. However, realistically speaking, we'd have set up separate tabs ahead of time or somebody would have agreed to pay for the table.

Given that 90% of the time my portion of the bill is far smaller than everybody else's -- since I don't drink -- I tend to avoid "even" splits because they're anything except even.

Tabs like that are generally incurred by groups of people with like minded dining habits

Also, if you know you're invited to a big dinner and are gonna go super cheap, why not just decline? I'm not gonna go to a Fogo De Chao, Ruth's Chris etc, with a group and be like "well...I didnt actually eat much, can I have my own bill?"

I don't think I've ever even been in a situation where I needed to split evenly that wasn't sharing food.
If food is shared, such as appetizers, the ones who got it splits. Otherwise, you pay for what you ordered.

If somehow the servers didn't keep track of what each order was and grouped them together, I suppose it would be easier to split in that case.

I probably wouldn't have been at that restaurant in the first place, as I don't like fancy restaurants.

But I'd pay for my meal only - both bc it feels more right for each to pay for their own and bc in my case I'd have paid a lot less than $100.

I pay for the whole thing to make sure everyone else at the table knows how much better than them i am. I also leave no tip so the server knows how much better than them I am.

In my experience, usually when this happens, one person will pay for the bill and the rest will CashApp/Venmo their portion of the bill to the person that paid.

However, most of the time, it is already communicated to the waitress that it'll be separate.

when I did go to a restaurant that had $100 meals per person (without drinks) I just paid the whole bill myself because it was only 1 other person. But if I was bringing a group of people, beforehand I woulda been like "this place is pricey, so you are paying for your own shit"

in situations where I've shared a bottle of wine with other people, I or someone else who is also sharing the bottle has always clarified that we are splitting the cost of the wine bottle only beforehand. definitely not the whole bill wtf lmao

Depends, I might just take the bill. But if we're gonna split it I usually ask the server which is easiest for them to do. Cause I've worked at restaurants where it was much easier to do it one way or the other depending on the software of the pos system

Add your tab + tip from that amount, put it in cash and hand the check book back to the friend or offer to venmo somebody. (Servers /hate/ running multiple cards)
