If they understand HP, understanding that it can automatically come back gradually doesn't require much by way of further thinking. Just as HP is a quantitative representation of physical well-being, regeneration is a quantitative representation of the natural healing process (albeit greatly accelerated for the sake of enjoyable gameplay, much like HP exaggerates how durable humans are). If you understand one, the other follows pretty intuitively.
