Hard disagree. That list is WAAAAAY to RPG heavy and all JRPGs at that. FF7, FF10, CT, AND P4 don't all make a universal top 20. Umineko whatever whatever is a game I've literally never heard of! FFT and MGS3 are marginal at very for a top 20. I'm unsure about CT's appeal to a wide audience.

Of that list, I'd only take FF7, Pokemon, OoT, and SMW to have a very good shot to make a broad (but not necessarily general) gaming audience's top 20.

I've noticed BotW's success has been cutting into OoT's placemen, so I'm curious what an aggregate with only recent lists would look like. There's no doubt that if BotW didn't exist or sucked, OoT would be one of the top 20 on the Golden Joystick top 20 in place of BotW.

One thing about top 10 or top 20 best game ever lists is that people are generally loath to include 2/3+ games from the same series, so there's a ton of vote-splitting from Zelda, Mario and GTA. Now that BotW has asserted itself as a top Zelda rep, this is going to depress OoT's placement a lot, possibly to below ALttP, which will also take a hit but can resist BotW a bit more since it's 2D. The 2D Marios with 1/3/World look to have a ton of vote-splitting too, which ends up hurting all of them, not to mention it still has to contend with the 3D Marios. And GTA overall is a complete mess with V seeming the current representative game of the series, but this could easily change when VI comes out.

I think OoT would no longer be in first, it barely finished ahead of Half-Life 2 in this list, though there is a bit of a gap between those two games and Resident Evil 4. I'm not sure if OoT will drop below LttP, especially when you consider Super Mario 64 is currently ahead of the latter and the game already suffers quite a bit from vote-splitting with other Marios.

Recency is hurting BotW as some models heavily weigh too much into historical data, on some aggregates the game is in the 30s while in others it has broken into the top 10. In fact the newest games to be in the top 100 are from 2018 and they just barely made it in.

I'm late to this and I disagree with some of the top 20 as well.

But I do want to defend Pokmon GO a bit - not because it necessarily belongs there, I would have probably went with RBY, but because some of the cases against it are incorrect. It's still incredibly successful. The idea that it's less relevant is than when it came out is wrong. It's just not talked as much about everywhere anymore, but they made significantly more money from it in 2020 than the first year. Also to whoever said it, it's not Japanese.

Pokemon Go is less relevant only in the sense that it was arguably the most relevant thing for a month or so, making any comparison a drop. In reality, the game is still in the top 10 for revenue in each month.

Go makes a billion a year, yeah. I think it's made more money than every Pokemon game combined. It's far from the most successful mobile game though, and I don't think it belongs on a top 20 all time list.

I wouldn't say "far from the most successful" it's top 5 in both downloads and highest grossing among mobile games (caveat up to date numbers are always difficult to find).

With that said, I wouldn't put it in my top 20 either. It's like Wii Sports where it gets respect points and that's about it...
