Um. I thought you could do local communication trades in Sw/Sh for free? Are you talking about BD/SP? If so that sucks and is yet another reason you shouldn't buy it.

To trade locally, you dont need an internet connection or a Nintendo Online subscription. To do so, open Pokmon Sword and Shield, and then press the Y button on your right Joy-Con controller to open Y-Comm. Select Link Trade at the top, and then choose Set Link Code.

The one issue I can see you having is with the Y-Comm, which is in honestly complete trash and is by far the worst communication feature Game Freak has ever designed. It had a hard time even detecting and connecting to my nephew's own Switch even when both consoles are in the same room and close to each other.

I had more luck setting a passcode and having him enter it so he can connect directly to it, but after the PSS in Gen 6 (which worked so great that it's a massive mystery that Game Freak just got rid of it) and even Festival Plaza in Gen 7, I shouldn't have to do that.

The scraping of PSS is basically the worst aspects of Game Freak distilled into a single action. They fucking perfected player to player communication and then they just tossed.
