Are you still wearing clothes and shoes that are 3+ years old?

according to statistics, people ought to be buying new clothes every year and shoes every 2 years on average and not to be wearing outdated clothing past 3 years...but are you still wearing clothing passed that expiry date?...

Most of my wardrobe is < 3 years old. But it's really not a conscious choice or that I'm rotating quite that regularly I just got a lot of new clothes the past few years. My usual lifespan is probably between 5-7 years

I switch two pairs of tennis shoes, but still need to replace them every 8-9 months because of how much I walk. They take a beating. Same goes for my socks. Dress shoes are old though, but I almost never wear them.

My shirts and underwear, however? I've had much of that for a very long time, some of it 10+ years. And I frankly don't care to replace any of it until it gets holes in. Pants tend to last 2-3 years before wearing down.

The idea of clothing being "outdated" is completely laughable. Who the fuck cares so long as it's comfortable and looks presentable?

I assume it is said by people who sell clothes.

I try to regularly go through my things and get rid of stuff I'm no longer using regularly, but I still have things from over a decade ago

I own a t-shirt given to me in Norway at the age of 9 in the summer ahead of the Lillehammer 1994 Winter Olympics. I still have it, use it and it's still in reasonably good condition.

And yes, it was very big for me at the time so I didn't use it until a couple of years later but I've probably regularly used it for about 23-24 years.

I guess I did fully replace my socks about 2 years ago.

I have about a hundred t-shirts, some are new and some are old. I like wearing the old ones just as much as the new ones.

I'm confused. Are we talking about clothing, or sour cream? Or forgotten food in the back of the fridge??

Shoes should be replaced regularly because your feet need the proper support, which wears down over time.

Clothes, however - if they are in good condition and still fit, continue to wear them! If they are in poor condition or in need of repair, repair them or relegate them to cleaning/painting clothes. You can upcycle old clothes into other things you can use. You can swap with your friends. You can shave pilling off your sweaters to make them look better.

I literally own a Montreal 1976 souvenir sweater that's in lovely condition - to be fair it's acrylic and for many years was stored carefully in a bag. But clothes are STILL. GOOD.

From about 9:20 to ~15:00 Bernadette Banner does a great job of explaining how practical older clothes are and what purpose they serve that modern, mass-produced clothing doesn't really do for us anymore.
