This is literally the first time I have heard of this film, I love historical dramas and this is right up my alley but I did not know it existed, marketing must have been fucking abysmal, at least here in the UK.

The weird part is they can have both.

Scorsese made Wolf of Wall Street which made like $400,000,000 and had tons of awards wins.

Ditto for Scott with the Martian. Made a ton of money and was a big awards winner.

Outside of them you'll have guys like Nolan who make non-franchise "arthouse"-style critically acclaimed films that pull in several hundred million dollars.

It's not a "one or the other" game. It's just a matter of making films that connect with audiences. Guys like Scott and Scorsese wanna have their cake and eat it too.

Not gonna lie I dont keep up with celebs. I thought Ridley Scott was the actress who played in alien. Dont ask I never put much thought into it other than the name being associated with alien.

The characters last name is Ripley. Probably an easy mistake to make.

As someone who is actually interested in seeing it, this is something Id watch at home. Nothing beats the comfort of being at home and ticket prices certainly dont help. Unless its something I really would like to watch in IMAX, Im not headed to a theater.

I thought we moved on to blaming zoomers.

Historical dramas are my jam tho, but I had no idea this movie was a thing. It seems poorly advertised.

I really enjoyed it but the only advertising I recall was in the theaters so if you weren't consistently going to movies ahead of this one (and watching the previews) you likely didn't see much about it.

He is definitely a hit or miss director, and it sounds like The Last Duel was a fantastic movie. But I didnt really have any interest in seeing another historical film either lol

This is serious old man energy here lmao, but he's not quite wrong. This movie was apparently pretty good (I've read the book, which was awesome, but I'm not among the 17 people who saw this movie). And the genres that big movies can be is pretty limited these days. Westerns, Medieval movies, and historical movies just don't get made these days. It's hard to imagine something like Unforgiven, A Knight's Tale, or Gladiator making a big splash today.

(Granted, medieval fantasy is in, but Game of Thrones is a far cry from this, which is based on a real historical event)

I saw it in the theaters and liked it. It also helped being familiar with the history and book. That being said the advertising was almost non-existent (even in the major market I live in). That combined with a pandemic and it was sadly doomed for a low box office.

I don't know if it was award worthy as I haven't really seen what else is out there this year.

A third of the movie is set from her perspective but yes her having no agency is sort of the entire point of the movie.

I mean I guess Im on the younger side of the "millenial" generation, but I definitely didn't grow up with a cell phone until I hit 19 or 20 as well. Even then, I'm not into Facebook or Tiktok which I think he's getting at?

Scott just sounds entitled, thinking everyone should just love his movie. If you want people to like your movie, it is your responsibility to make it appealing. Not the audience.

Review wise it seems to be doing fine. Yeah it's not pulling in the 10/10 or 100% or 5/5 like he probably wanted, but the reviews overall seem to suggest it's a solid movie

If it's because of the box office numbers, then Scott is just out of touch with reality. I'm not sure how it is with other movies, but I'd be willing to bet nearly every movie that releases in theatres is doing worse than they would have done pre-COVID.
