Parts 1 - 3 continue the same save. Part 4 was a new one so they probably made it accessible to fans of the original that just wanted the new content.

Because you pretty much need to do that.

Hell, you'll probably also have to read every entry in a .hack wiki to really get plugged in unless you're actually Japanese. Like, you probably don't even know that Haseo is actually the same player as Sora - which would be totally obvious if you spoke Japanese and were familiar enough with 350 year old Japanese literature to get the pun hidden in his names!

And yes, literally everything I just said is 100% true and not a joke or sarcasm in any way.

Some of his consciousness was trapped within Skeith's staff, not just his avatar's data. It's why, in Outbreak, Sora thanks you when you free him, then he fades away. Then, at the end of Quarantine, you get the duplicate of his avatar, but not his player.

Meanwhile, in the real world, his parents are so concerned for their 10-year-old child's well-being, they do away with his copy and subscription to The World, and cut him off from all of it. Sora's player has amnesia due to his trauma of being data drained in Sign and the events of Infection. Seven years later, he is able to try The World again, and does so just to see what it's all about since he does not remember playing it. Then he is taken advantage of by a pair of serial PKs.

So to answer your question, yes, he did experience things through the first .hack// game, in addition to that data drain. Traumatic experiences have been found to lead to blackouts in memory, if not amnesia involving periods of time; though those affected periods of time tend to be short and bring with them triggers. We don't really see Haseo have PTSD for events he does not remember, so much as react to more current events, but I can chalk that up to the writers in 2006 or earlier not having such information.

Being data drained and left in a coma for months apparently fucks with your head. It's kind of implied that most of the victims from the first games don't necessarily remember stuff, either because the data drain itself screws with their memory, or just because they're repressing an incredibly traumatic experience.

It's also part of the lore that being one of the first people data drained by Skeith is what bound the two of them together in the first place, which is why he became an Epitaph User in the first place.

Also, if that feels like bullshit to you, I probably shouldn't mention that Kuhn is the same player as Sieg from Liminality - someone else who got data drained and became bound to one of the Phases. And supposedly he has memory loss issues from that time period as well.

I'd also point out who Endrance actually is, but that one should be blatantly obvious. Yata being Wiseman might be less obvious, though.

To be fair, he was like 9 years old when he was Sora and a teenager as Haseo, so radical personality changes are pretty believable.

But there's also the fact that having a large chunk of your memory either erased or repressed is probably going to screw with how you see the world, so maybe most of Haseo's introvert and asshole tendencies are just undiagnosed and untreated PTSD.

And even beyond that, being forced to spend years offline by your parents - essentially isolating you from all your video game playing peers - would probably be a pretty negative experience for a young kid, and might help explain why he starts having social interaction issues.

"Fine" is a stretch - Sora/Haseo's reaction is probably the most severe, but some of the others had issues afterwards as well. Having your brain forcably disconnected from your body leaving you in a coma for months isn't going to end with you just waking up and having no adverse side effects whatsoever.

Also, Sora was the youngest victim - so maybe that plays a role in why his reaction to it was worse.

There's also the possibility that Skeith sort of keeping a piece of Sora with him (which he doesn't seem to do with anyone else) somehow made Sora's data draining way worse than other people's.

One of the very first news articles you can read in the game explicitly says that The World was released in 2007, and was one of the first games released after the "incident".

The game's been around for a while when SIGN starts, and there's officially 6 months between SIGN and the original games. SIGN is 2009, the games are 2010. Twilight Bracelet is 2014. GU is 2017.

Aura disappears in 2014 relating to Twilight Bracelet, network errors start to proliferate. Project GU begins in 2015, as people in the know try to duplicate the original purpose of The World and recreate Aura (or a new version of her) to essentially be the goddess of the Internet and fix things. Shit goes horribly, horribly wrong, which results in the data for Tarvos being sent to the player who eventually becomes Pi (because her brother was part of the original project and sent it to her in an attempt to stop it).

The fire this causes destroys most of the servers running The World. CC Corp desperately tries to salvage what data they can to reconstruct Harald's original black box to try and recreate Aura again. What they cobble together becomes the core of The World 2.0, which is released at the end of 2015.

The early parts of Roots take place in 2016, the later parts and the GU games take place in 2017.

About the only part of all that that's kind of an asspull is how CC Corp can effectively rebuild an entirely new version of The World based on damaged and corrupted data in less than a year, but that's still pretty easy to handwave. And the timeline is consistent in pretty much every other way.

Reasonably solid game series, but not one that is really great unless you really enjoy faux MMO games and weird shit going on in said MMO. I don't think you have to play the older .Hack games to understand what is going in in GU.

This is especially true when getting the older games is super pricey or requires emulation, the final .Hack game in that series is one of the most expensive PS2 games ever. All 4 games loose without any box or manual would run at least $250-300 on Ebay.
