I bought into the hype that FF6 was the greatest game ever made and when I played it it was really mediocre. I was so bored playing it that I used the Vanish+Doom bug to rush through the game.

Over the last 10-15 years I keep trying to get through this game under the pretense that this game had a great story and deep gameplay mechanics. And I always fizzle out like right after you get espers.

I'm going to keep trying, I just needed to get this rant out as I'm in between frustration. The story is whatever so far. The combat is janky as hell. Is there even a point to naming their classes? They're just their own character and do their own stuff.

I literally have Game Overed from the Maria play in the beginning like 10 times cuz it's so fucking slow I keep looking away and missing the prompts lol (that is my fault but still).

Then you randomly will just encounter someone that 1 hits your entire party amidst trash mobs that do nothing. Kay.

And this game has the old school save system so if you get stuck somewhere or die randomly, you have to retrace like an hour of your steps.

I get it. From a modern perspective the game mechanics are extremely dated and basic. I played it when it came out, so those are the types of games I grew up with so it doesn't bother me. I don't know if I would enjoy them had that not been the case.

My chief issue is that the game has characters that are just objectively better than all the others. Like Sabin's Blitzes by the end of the game are so powerful that there is no reason not have him in your party at all times. It's frustrating because there are 14 characters to use and level but 5 or so of them are just inherently more powerful than all the rest.

i never said i hate the story and i didn't use hyperbole lol. a lot of it is just corny classical story telling, with no help from visuals, so it's just hard to be particularly immersed. kefka is like outrageously over the top. edgars first impression is being a huge dbag. what the fuck is Gao. this other dudes kingdom/family being poisoned is sad but also who are you. also his class is samurai, which seems mostly irrelevant in a game where classes don't matter, you can't change them, and it has no bearing on his character. maybe i'm mistaken with that but i don't care for anything except like Terra and maybe Sabin.

that being said, i wouldn't call the story a negative.

i get that. and i try to see the game through that lense. but i just think all things considered it lacks what a lot of the later FFs do in terms of storytelling through visuals and misses a major draw with that. That being said, FFT is one of my favorite FFTs, but that's just for the gameplay. the story is cool too though.

the only sprite based game i like that i can think of is FFT, if that counts. i grew up just past the era of those types of games so it's hard for me to look past that. but just even navigating the mechanics and battle system, i don't feel particularly immersed.

Probably my favorite FF. But even though I'd never make some outlandish claim like this about it, I could never see what others seen in Chrono Trigger. It's alright, but it could not exist and I wouldn't lose anything. Unlike games like Earthbound and FF6. Games I pretty much always am in a playthrough of.

I actually have the same issue with FFT. The limit of having 5 characters on the map in a game with so many characters available is annoying and unnecessary. And again there people that are just objectively better than everyone else. There is zero reason to not have TG Cid in your party and just fucking trash everyone. Though if you do like FFT you might enjoy Tactics Ogre, the graphics are a bit rougher but the story is better and you can have up to ten dudes on the map at a time.

It's certainly the worst of the three SNES games and overall a mediocre addition to the series. It's not outright bad like 2 and 8, but it fits right in with the substandard ones like 3, 12, and 13

Maybe I should replay it or something. I just remember it being kind of stupid the majority of the time. With characters who are straight up forgotten by the plot after theyre introduced lol

6 and 8 had far more replay value to me than 7. I played them both through many times. I tried to replay 7 once but lost interest as soon as I reached Aeris in that church thing after the floating robot boss that explodes
