Most places will want a degree in computer science / IT / MIS / whatever else, but if that is not possible, I'd say to start learning programming via codecademy.com or any other free resources to see if you like it / are a good fit, then move up to figuring out what type of programming you'd like (web programming, devops, backend, database dev, etc.) and then if you're really good, try doing leetcode so that you can do well in technical interviews. I will start using free internet resources to see if really have interest in the field, but yeah I highly doubt I would have the discipline to become a competent programmer without the structure of college.
