I miss the glory days of yahoo. At one point, the messenger was basically its own microcosm of everything you use other sites for now. Chatrooms, music/video streaming, news, games, job listings, collaborative art (albeit limited). I had a whole world in there, which was really big for a 14 year old.

Yeah, and usually they are getting a portion of their compensation through an equity stake in the company. It is a lot easier to motivate yourself to do insane crunch like this if you get 2.5% of the company's growth or whatever.

Hmm, hard to put into words but I'll give it a shot. They take too much pride in their work. I think they are the type to stealth brag about working 12 hour days and they expect others to do the same (without outright saying it). Like if the client is expecting something something yesterday they'll burn the midnight oil to get it done, and not really give a shit about their or their teams health. It's also a very dude-bro work hard play hard culture. Just overall very exhausting.

Edit: I'm in consulting so that may play a part, but even in that specific area the culture difference is like what I explained above.

Overall she's probably worked fewer hours than most people though. She just front loaded her life. Although they could've just budgeted another person to do her job though and worked a much more manageable 65 hour week which is still pretty hard work to do consistently.

Also, getting in on the ground floor with a company that will make you a millionaire is like winning the lottery. Not everyone is going to be rich from it. Many are just going to be tired and still be poor.

Maybe, but perhaps thats the price that must be paid to achieve greatness in competitive fields. Its common for top tier athletes, musicians and other competitors to devote pretty much their entire lives, at least their formative years, to chasing excellence. Businesses and even countries arent that different.
