You say that now, but the moment you hear the ground shaking and see a large T90 main battle tank that's nearly bulletproof heading towards your direction...
I'm pretty certain you'd run for the hills!

Tanks are great for invading/controlling civilization.
If your goal is to mess up a town of civilians in any way, tanks are speedy, terrifying, and impregnable by any normal person.

Spoiler alert for why tanks aren't good at taking over towns:
A Molotov is basically all you need to take one out of commission. Between all the angles you need checked and buildings that need to be cleared before you can even roll one in, you're usually better off looking for alternative solutions first.

But yeah, they can absolutely wreck an entire bunker or whatever while being pretty safe for the operators.

What would need to happen for tanks to not be obsolete?

After thinking that over for five seconds I'm actually confused. Most drones are better armed than a lot of tanks. When and how will tanks catch up to everything else?

You could come up with a plausible scenario, say they got fusion generators running... and needed a mobile weapons platform for high energy weapons/defense.

I'm fairly certain that modern tanks have armor designed to resist heat/incendiary damage. A molotov simply wouldn't be enough to down a tank, especially since modern tanks have the latest state of the art equipment making it easier for anyone in a tank to spot hostile forces without having to climb ontop of the tanks haul and risk being shot. You know, 360 cameras and thermal cameras, hull mounted machine guns...

Gonna have to throw down some mines in there for it to be effective, some tanks have amazing off-road capabilities...
some can even drive on shallow rivers without ever having to set foot on a booby trapped road.

Tanks are useful in certain siutations. Having tanks is useful for defending a base, for example. However you start coming at me, I'll move my tanks around to act as turrets. In theory, the enemy will grossly underestimate my fire power if I keep the tanks hidden in a bunker. They're also useful for actual old fahsioned recon.

Tanks are amazing in conventional warfare. You can overtake cities easily. It's once that you get into guerilla warfare that they become a target rather than an apex predator.

If you send in footsoldiers to initiate any potential hiccups before the tanks roll in, they work to occupy a cleared area. In recon, you want them surrounded by troops on foot and in trucks to prevent people from trying to blow up the tank. What's concerning is bombs and rockets. A city is actually a horrible place for a tank.

A M1 Abrams right off the line is an invincible superbeast that has only been felled by M1 Abrams friendly fire.

A M1 Abrams ten years later is a radioactive deathbox, when the depleted uranium has decayed into beta and gamma hell.

238U is harmless, but it soon accumulates decay daughters who are all bad news.
Those polonium isotopes are especially bad.

The four and a half billion years half-life of U-238 means there's not much risk, but its spinning off disasters the whole time.

You're not getting "baked" in the deathbox, really. It's just increasingly radioactive over time, particularly as beta-emitters accumulate. The first U-238 decay is two beta-emitters in a row, which elevates the "background" radiation inside and near the tank quite a bit, but it's "elevated" instead of "holyshit". Your great grandma probably had radioactive dinnerware that's more dangerous.

Alpha radiation should be stopped by the rest of the armor, and the tanker's own skin. Those polonium isotopes are very unlikely to get inside a tank operator somehow, but it's very bad news if they do.
