Current Events > Is it surprising to anyone that $1.2k-$1.5k/month rent is $72k-$90k in 5 years?

I know there's a bunch of people who have no choice but to rent an apartment but there's a lot of people who can probably stay with their parents for a while and buy a home instead of wasting it on rent. For those who have the choice of living rent free with your parents but chose to live on your own and rent, how do you make yourself feel better spending that amount of money on something you won't own and basically your hard earned money will disappear?

walking up and down your parents as an adult is a bitter pill to swallow especially when you've tasted the sweet taste of personal space and freedom.

Yeah I would still pay rent to not live with my parents. Not because we don't get along but after living 600+ miles from them for over 10 years now I can't go back to that lifestyle

Same reason I'll never have a roommate again unless I have no other option. I'd rather live in a 10x10 foot shithole than share a place with a roommate

Soon as I turned 18 and got a job I was paying rent to my parents til I moved out

Then when I moved out, they gave it all back to me as a moving out of home gift. Taught me the value of budgeting and setting aside enough for rent each week. Some weeks I would have literally $20 leftover after paying them rent if it was a week I had to fill up my car, pay car insurance, phone bill etc.

no I just saw a tiktok video on this and when they did the math and showed numbers I was kinda surprised.

it'll take 20 years to have enough for a place. that's for the lowest end too.

Seems like the consensus is it's worth wasting money on renting over saving money by living with our parents

My mom rents an apartment. I don't rent the house I live in. So with that being said, not everyone has the option to save up for a house by moving in with parents. >_>

The idea that someone can or should just "save up and buy a home" is the dumbest thing I see spouted on these boards by people who know nothing about it. There are so many factors that go into this even long after acquiring the house

Cant really put a price on your independence. Im 34 and when I eat out with my parents my mom still tries to order for me

Property taxes, incidentals, landscaping / tree maintenance, dues and fees, appliances, etc.

It's not a straight tit for tat, money compared to money, sort of thing.

Rent is just gone.
A house is an investment, or at the very least you can cut your losses.

Yeah thinking about that now it does seem dumb but seems like my parents sheltered me all my life and basically took care of everything that an adult should do/know
