Its a matter of perspective, I think.

Cigarettes are a long term possible death sentence and an over time health destroyer.

Alcohol is roll the dice with every single indulgence and much more obviously and quickly destructive if the person actually goes through the physiological change of becoming an alcoholic.

A person who never develops alcoholism but drinks occasionally probably rolls the dice a hell of a lot less so cigarettes wrecking their lungs and esophagus is probably worse.

My .02, tobacco is a blight to the human condition in regard that the tobacco lobby keeps us smoking, the insurance lobby keeps us uninsured to the effects and the only people who lose are the smokers.

Alcohol has more of a purpose for people who dont become alcoholics, who use it to help get by in a cruel ducking world and who are the overwhelming majority of people who consume. Cigarettes just kill and make people sick and make evil MFrs rich.

I'd say cigarettes. It's possible to drink responsibility and millions of people do it. There's no such thing as smoking cigarettes responsibility. If you smoke cigarettes at all, it's naturally addictive and harmful.

My dad, three of his brothers and his parents all died from smoking-related diseases. No one in my family's ever died from an alcohol-related illness. I'd suggest alcohol is maybe less lethal in its health effects but potentially more life-ruining.

Id argue the exact opposite.

ABUSING alcohol may harm more people, but even casual cigarette smoking harms more people than alcohol.

Live in a single room apartment with someone who smokes two cigarettes a day, and someone who drinks two beers a day.

Take a physical after a year. The other person smoking will physically harm you more that the person that drank those two beers.

That depends on who you're talking about the danger to.

Cigarettes are more dangerous to the person smoking them, than alcohol is to the person drinking it.
Alcohol is more dangerous to society in general, than cigarettes are to it.

Basically depends on whether you look at it from an individualistic or collectivistic viewpoint. (Though most people who'd go for the former would also argue it's the person's right to choose to smoke anyway.)

Alcohol arguably does more long-term damage to you, but it at least has a point. You can live your entire life without smoking, and you won't be missing anything.

With booze and weed, you're at least getting a buzz out of it. With smokes, you're basically licking a feral cat's asshole until you can't live without the taste of cat asshole in your mouth. The calming effect of smoking is basically your body reacting to being fed a substance it's been made to depend on through exposure - it's the act of sating the addiction that affects you, not the substance itself.

I'm not saying alcohol is any better, but I am saying that the consumption of alcohol at least has a point. I could be wrong about cigarettes, but I've tried smoking and it just never took. Alcohol at least messes with my perception along with all the bad shit it does to me. The only effect smoking has manifests after you've developed a dependence on nicotine, not because nicotine itself has that effect. You can get the same calming effect from coffee, or even alcohol, once you develop an addiction to the narcotic. Alcohol might be more damaging in the long run, but it at least has a point to it.
