45th: Bomb

Before there were copy abilities, Kirby was sometimes able to gain temporary powerups in his very first game, Kirbys Dream Land. The powerups are as follows

  • Superspicy Curry: It is so spicy that Kirby cant stop spitting out heat! Has a copy ability successor; Fire from Kirbys Adventure onward. Rick + Burning is the Dream Land 2 and 3 equivalent.
  • Mic: Kirby uses the Mic to make his voice loud and clear. Hes a very bad singer, as his song proceeds to defeat all enemies on screen. Has a copy ability successor; Mic from Kirbys Adventure onward.
  • Sweet Potato/Mint Leaf: In the original Japanese version (Kirby of the Stars, which is also the name of the anime and the series and a whole over there), this powerup was known as a sweet potato. When Kirby ate it, he became gassy and constantly belched in the face of enemies. When Nintendo of America localized the game, the powerup was changed to be a mint leaf. The description for it was nearly the exact opposite of the sweet potato; Instead of Kirby getting bad breath, he got good breath, breath that was so good it could defeat enemies. Due to the Game Boy being 8 bit and colorless, the sprite did not need to be changed. This powerup is used in the boss fight against Kaboola (later renamed to Kabula) at the end of Float Islands, and again during the boss rush at Mt. Dedede. In Triple Deluxes Kirby Fighters, this powerup returns as one of many items, having mostly the same effect it did in Dream Land. Surprisingly, Nintendo of America remembered the localization they did of the item over 21 years prior, and so the item has a different 3D model across different versions. In the Japanese version, it is a sweet potato, while in the international versions, it is a mint leaf. This remained the same for Kirby Fighters 2. Unlike the other powerups, the sweet potato/mint leaf has no copy ability successor, but the balloon item in Tilt n Tumble functions similarly.
  • Invincible Candy: A special lollipop that Kirby likes very much (but not as much as tomatoes). It is practically identical to the Super Star from Super Mario, letting Kirby be invincible (except for pits) for a little bit. This was the only powerup to return in future games.
  • Bomb: Kirby would eat it before it blew up, and spit it out, knocking out enemies in a line. This powerup has two successors. The first is the double enemy spit star, which debuted as part of Kirbys normal moveset in Adventure, and would make a return in every standard inhale and spit Kirby platformer afterwards except for Dream Land 2.

Guess what the second one is.

But unlike Fire and Mic, Bomb did not make its debut in Adventure. But there were some things leading up to it.

In Dream Lands first level, Green Greens, there was a mid-boss by the name of Poppy Bros. Sr.. He attacked Kirby in two ways. The first was jumping/ramming into him. The second attack was more common, with him throwing bombs at Kirby. Kirby had to inhale the bombs and launch them back at the baddie to make progress. But he had to eat them before they exploded!

In Adventure, Sr. made a grand return, acting the same as he did in the previous game. In Adventure, mid-bosses had copy abilities, a tradition that would continue into the modern Kirby games of today. Grand Wheelie gave Wheel, Rolling Turtle gave Throw, etc..

So what copy ability did Poppy Bros. Sr. provide?

Crash.

Crash is a limited use ability, having only one use. With it, Kirby unleashes an explosion so wide, that all enemies on screen are destroyed, and any bosses on screen take massive damage. To differentiate from Mic, Mic has three uses while Crash has one. Crash would return in future Kirby games, but would be given out by regular enemies Bomber (who was already in Adventure) and Searches instead. In Kirby Super Star and its remake, when you scan a Starfy or a Mr. Anglep with Copy, you gain the Crash ability. In Star Allies, although the Crash ability wasnt removed, there is a similar ability called Festival.

Then there was Super Star. Super Star was the first game to introduce NEW abilities, unless you count the combinations with the animal friends in Dream Land 2.

While both the Crash ability and the Poppy Bros. Sr. mid-boss returned, this time, Sr. didnt give Crash.

He gave Bomb.

Bomb was a projectile based ability. Kirby would pull out a bomb, and then be allowed to specifically aim it using the D-Pad controls. It was explosive but simple. But if he held a bomb for too long, it would explode and Kirby would get hurt. Oddly enough, in Super Star, Kirby already has a bomb pulled out the instant he gets this ability.

Skip to four years later. In the transition from Dream Land 3 to 64, two abilities were removed despite it already being a relatively small roster; Parasol and Clean. However, they did bring over another ability to make up for it. Despite the contrast between the multi-move abilities of Super Star and the one move abilities of the Dark Matter trilogy, this returning ability was from Super Star. And it was Bomb.

In this game, Bomb was altered to fit the one move ability pattern of this game. You pressed the usual button to launch a bomb. If you held the button, it would launch farther, allowing some sort of option with aiming, albeit less accurate but easier to learn. Like every other copy ability in this game, it can be mixed with any other ability to create a new one, including itself.

Then it returned in Amazing Mirror. Amazing Mirror experimented with adding back multi-move abilities, although it would not be until Squeak Squad that theyd fully implement it. Bomb gained its Super Star style aiming skills once again. In Squeak Squad, it returns in the same way. In that game, once you obtain the proper ability scroll, if you mix a Bomb bubble with an Ice or Spark bubble, youll get the Ice Bomb or Thunder Bomb ability, respectively. These abilities are the same as the regular Bomb but with elemental properties. Sword can also be infused with elements.

Bomb is in all main RtDL era games, being similar to how it was in Super Star. It is also available to play as in Kirby Fighters and its sequels, and Kirby Battle Royale.

Finally, while Bomb has not been confirmed to return in Forgotten Land, a Foley (enemy that debuted in Amazing Mirror and has appeared in most games with Bomb since) could be seen in the initial trailer, suggesting that Bomb is coming back as always.

[Bomb also appears in Air Ride, but there it functions more like Crash.]

(Wow. That took me a while to type out.
