Of a laser cutting my eyeball open. Do I just need to man up?

The laser can't cut your eye open but you risk being blinded permanently regardless.

My wife got lasik a couple of years ago. She had been wearing glasses for like 10 years. She's super happy with the decision

Also my brother got it like 15 years ago and I don't think he ever had any issues

I did PRK which is the way more painful, rudimentary, and longer healing timeline of the two surgeries.

Still one of the better decisions of my life, go for it brah.

I heard sometimes the laser pokes out some patients' eyes. It doesn't happen very often, but just don't be surprised.

When I got it a decade ago, they sliced open a flap on the surface of my eye to clear a path for the laser, then squeegeed it back in place. I'm pretty sure technology has improved since then and the procedure no longer requires any cutting.

Either way, still money very well spent. 20/15 vision after decades of being blind as hell has been awesome.

Does the flap ever accidentally open?

Nope. I had to spend a couple weeks being rather careful to not touch or rub my eyes, but it healed pretty quickly.

huh is that true? I used to be on a disability mailing list in college, and one guy wrote in saying he was adapting to living fully blind after a botched laser surgery o_o really weird if he was lying about that

I'd think it would be especially strange if he was fully blind. What, did they fuck up the same way in both eyes or something?

That is a screenshot of comic sans from a lasik clinic.

https://www.webmd.com/eye-health/news/20180727/lasik-know-the-rewards-and-the-risks

The reality is lasik is surgery and all surgeries carry risks of things going very bad. Among straight up vision loss, Lasik has caused detached retinas which have a narrow window of time to be corrected before it turns into permanent blindness.

These risks are tiny and you will likely be turned away if they think you're a risky patient but they are still real risks.

Chances are if his story was true then it's either a problem with the equipment or a problem with himself. Dumber things have been known to happen.
