Now you should realize how this greedy culture actually costs lives as Amazon required workers to work during a tornado because Bezos simply is not rich enough.

https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-worker-not-allowed-leave-facility-as-tornado-approached-girlfriend-2021-12

An Amazon worker who was killed in the Edwardsville, Illinois, warehouse collapse wasn't allowed to leave as a tornado was approaching, his girlfriend told the New York Post. Larry Virden, who started working for Amazon five months ago, was among the six employees who died in the destruction.

"He always tells me when he is filling up the Amazon truck when he is getting ready to go back I was like 'OK, I love you.' He's like, 'well Amazon won't let me leave until after the storm blows over,'" she told the Post.
Jones told the Post that Virden texted her 16 minutes before the tornado was said to have touched down. She said this was enough time to get back to their house in nearby Collinsville, which she said was a 13-minute drive away.
"We heard the tornado didn't touch down until 8:39 so he had 20 minutes to get home," she told the Post.

Well... where are you going to go? Outside, where the tornado is?

A tornado warning doesn't mean "okay everyone dogpile onto the highway" - it means "get your ass into a shelter, NOW!"

wait...why would the employee be allowed to leave during a tornado watch or warning? that's the WORST thing you can do!

the question is did this building have some place lower to the ground for people to hide.

at my place we go down to the first floor and into the center hallway, and preferably sit, away from all windows.

You go to the place made of cinderblocks and preferably underground, and even then that's just a "less likely to die here" space.

Warehouses generally don't have basements, though. The best option was probably a back office or restroom or something.

You wouldn't hear about it because then amazon has allowed them to either go find an adequate shelter or leave the area. So those options are no longer amazon's fault.

Telling them to stay in an unsafe building and work and people die is indeed their fault.

The issue is making sure there is somewhere in the building that can withstand severe weather events.

"But he said he could make it home in 15 minutes" is not a defense any company is going to want to use when asked why they sent people home during an imminent tornado threat.

Where's the part that says this? What makes you think they were working when the tornado hit?

When I worked at Target, a tornado warning meant everybody moved to the back wall, employees and customers alike, to be as far away from windows and doors as possible until the warning ended.

Most companies don't let employees leave for this very reason. If they send employees home during a tornado warning and they get killed in transport, the company could be held liable for their lives because they allowed them to leave during work hours.

My employer did the same thing when we ran out of power and were under a tornado watch. We were all sitting in the dark with no access to our computers and we get a mass text saying no one is allowed to leave until the storm passes over us. This was explained to me later by an attorney why it was done that way.

Still horrible that the decision is a legal one vs. a moral one (company doesn't want to get sued for negligence) but this isn't unique to Amazon.

Also this mindset only exists because of greed.

Like Texas not winterizing their powergrid.

If we tackle the stupid notions of our culture that say saftery measures are too expensive and can't be made cause they cut into profits, then yes indeed a tornado bunker would exist in such a state.

was gonna say, i was at a kohl's last year when we got a tornado warning and had to shelter in place with the employees. it was their policy to keep safe employees and customers. employees could not leave, but they allowed us to leave if we wanted to. i wanted to buy my shit on sale so i stayed

I don't take them seriously because you're so over the top about it. You have the anger, but not any direction or insight. Plus, you regularly lash out at people who are just trying to get by like somehow they're you're enemy.

So the real solution is, if there is a Tornado Watch issued then workers should be allowed to go home.

During a Tornado Warning, I can fully understand why they didn't let them go because a Warning means a Tornado is expected or has formed in the affected area. However a Tornado Watch just means the conditions are possible for a Tornado to form.

Since a Tornado does not announce its exact grid or path, leaving during a Warning could actually result in you driving directly into (the path of) a Tornado and getting hurt or killed when staying at work would have resulted in you being safe.
