Are you HYPED to see Ryusuke Hamaguchi's Drive My Car? Adapted from the short story written by Haruki Murakami?

I am but it is three hours long and I can't be bothered to turn seeing a movie into a five hour ordeal with traffic added in. Which I feel bad about. If it were playing closer to me I'd go see it.

Here are the last five films to win Best Picture from both awards bodies:

2018: Roma
2014: Boyhood
2010: The Social Network
2009: The Hurt Locker
2005: Brokeback Mountain

All big Oscar players, but I suspect Drive My Car won't have the capital to mount a strong Oscar campaign. It is being distributed by Janus Films who are owned by the Criterion Collection and generally only do very small releases for foreign films or restorations of older films. It is however Japan's submission for Best Foreign Language Feature so maybe it could be nominated or win there.

saving megaplex theaters maybe. here in LA we are losing another laemmle theater (small arthouse chain) and lost the arclights (other small chain that showed mixed of blockbuster/arthouse) last year to regal/amc. looks like the hollywood location (with the cinerama dome) is coming back at some point next year though under different management so who knows what that will look like...

need to move back to NYC asap where there's more support for arthouses.
