"In England, at this day, if elections were open to all classes of people, the property of landed proprietors would be insecure. An agrarian law would soon take place. If these observations remain just, our government ought to secure the permanent interests of the country against innovation. Landholders ought to have a share in the government, to support these invaluable interests, and to balance and check the other. They ought to be so constituted as to protect the minority of the opulent against the majority. The Senate, therefore, ought to be this body; and to answer these purposes, they ought to have permanency and stability." - James Madison
Unfortunately Madison would go on & on about protecting minority from majority rule even to the point of defending the opulent.

I don't think it SHOULD be the case that the cities have total control of the government, when rural states might require different things and policies and should be represented as well. I think the way they did it makes some sense. Again, Manchen is one vote. He doesn't have any more power than anybody else. The problem is NO republicans voted for the bill. That is just so weird to me. He SHOULD vote no if he doesn't like the idea, this shouldn't be a team sport. It should be people doing what's best for the country

The fundamental problem is that the senate does not represent the people. There are as many republicans in the senate as there are because it was designed to represent land over people

at a federal level, the legislation that affects everyone should not be being held up by a small minority of the population

But having it only represent the densest population centers fails to represent all the types of people in the US. Being dominated by cities would be a really bad experience for anybody that lives in a rural area, and that doesn't seem fair either. Going by pure majority does not represent all interest groups really, and that can be problematic too. Minority opinions should be represented as well and given a voice, or else they will be stomped on.

Sure, but they shouldn't be allowed have disproportionate power over a much larger majority. Especially since the Senate will only grow even less representative of the populace of the US as time goes on.

I think one of the biggest issues though is that we can't even find issues to come together on. How is it that we seem to disagree on everything? I would love to see votes that don't fall along party lines. How is it that all 50 republicans agree with each other on every single issue and all 50 democrats the same besides one? I know that's not exactly true but it often feels like that.

these days the party line mostly determines which companies are paying the politicians millions of dollars to vote a certain way. they're beholden to their true masters. Manchin happens to have interests in an industry which is different from most other democrat politicians.

We do see that. It's usually on terrible things like trash judges, wars, and tax cuts for the rich. The things that the parties agree on are our collective blind spots as a country or where the incentives align. Otherwise, the parties have different ideologies and backgrounds and are very well sorted and polarized at this point, of course they're going to disagree.

Disagreement isn't the issue, the obstruction of progress is.

This is a lie that unfortunately the vast majority of Americans have fallen for. Truth is like 95% of legislation is passed with overwhelming bipartisan support.

Stunts like these with BBB are just obstructionism for political posturing and don't always reflect the feelings of the republicans who voted on it.

I probably don't need to explain why this is terrible.

Apparently Manchin has a history of trying to play both Rep and Dem.. Don't really follow politics at all(like most people until the presidential elections) but from the media regarding politics you'd think he was the president

And as someone eluded too earlier Biden could bills that will have major support which some already have but most people in general only care about the economy...We can point to things like Afghanistan or policies overseas but I guarantee the average person doesn't care. I'd say most people don't stick to watching news 24/7

Notice how Biden's approval rating has silently improved a bit when gas prices have started to lower in certain states... Inflation is the number one thing people care about when it comes to presidents. You could be laughed at by world leaders or be terrible overseas politically. Most won't care because it doesn't effect them

For people who are unfamiliar with what "the national debt" means, please refer to this primer.

https://youtu.be/yq_E3HquRJY

In short, a national debt isn't necessarily a good or bad thing on its own, it's the return on investment you expect from it that determines whether taking on a certain amount is worthwhile.

1. The bill doesn't add to the debt; it raises taxes to cover the costs (which is more than can be said for the infrastructure or military bills Manchin supported)
2. WV residents don't seem particularly opposed to it
