Not specifically

Taking out a loan to pay for a house or car is not considered "bad financial behavior". Buying video games, TV's, vacations, going out to eat, etc. all on credit is. This is pretty easy to understand.

I had a college friend who completely tanked his credit because he decked out his apartment in expensive furniture and electronics, racking up like $15k in credit card debt. It took him years to dig himself out.

Just fyi the main thing the vast majority of people use their FICO score for is to secure financing for homes and cars, not purchase video games

addendum: that thing one guy you know did one time is not an argument for or against anything. Its just a story of what one guy you know did one time

Yes, but buying a bunch of shit on credit (and then being bad at paying it off) is what tanks your FICO score

Well that and opening too many cards, or not having enough cards, or closing too many cards, or using your cards too much, or not using your cards enough, or checking your credit too much, etc etc

and its unclear because theres no real transparency to any of it

It's not really very hard to have a good credit score.

Now the bullshit part is that you need a good credit score to buy a house or car (which are the main ways to get a good credit score). Getting your foot in the door is the main pain in the ass

There's also the fact that the credit scores you're given online aren't even guaranteed to match the scores that lenders are given. The fact that there are multiple formulas, none of which anybody is given access to, combined with the fact that they don't even have to give you a real calculation, means that nobody really has a good sense of exactly how credit works, which is a problem.

https://www.cnbc.com/2019/05/10/those-credit-scores-you-see-may-not-be-what-lenders-use.html

yep

still bitter about the time I paid $30 for my Equifax credit score from Equifax so I could try to refinance my car loan without a hard inquiry dinging it a few points.

they said I had a 673. I knew I needed at least a 650 to get the rate I was aiming for. Went to the bank, applied for the refinance, and their Equifax score came back as 635. So not only did I waste $30, I dinged my score a few points anyway.

My home insurance literally tried to say they raised my price substantially because I checked my credit too much or opened too many new accounts.

I literally had done neither in a whole year and a half. Was bs cause I easily found cheaper insurance.

Idk anything about this formula you speak of and never needed it. Just do what the they tell you to do on the FICO page and you're have a high score in due time. Although it may take longer then some depending on your history.

Yes, because you're have 1 less open account which in turn affects your account age and again, your credit score. But as it ages, it will eventually rise again. None of this is a secret.

Seriously, if you people actually spent more time learning about them rather then writing them off as some vague, capitalists scam you'd have a high score and taking advantage of all the perks it offers.
Lol fuck off, my score is over 800, that doesn't change the fact that the whole system is fucking scam. If it wasn't they would release the exact formulae and criteria they use.

Do you just not have a credit history? If not you probably aren't going to get accepted for a rewards card. Just get a secured credit card.

life hack - take a college class or two and get a small student loan to get a fancy nice laptop that'll last you like 3-5 years. like a shiny nice macbook pro. it'll be low interest and maybe even eventually discharged, and it improves your credit score if you pay it every month for a bit. should have a nice laptop anyway and a class couldn't hurt and it's just a small way to show that you can repay money that was borrowed, which makes creditors more willing to lend in the future and in larger amounts.
