Came in prepared to say Mickey but when I saw Santa, yeah I have to give it to him. It's definitely one or the two though.

Can Santa Claus really count? There are many different versions of the character around the world, and several are even only kinda loosely similar, whereas characters like Mickey and Mario are just one distinct character.

I don't think Santa Claus is a good answer to this question, no. Even if the diffusion of american pop culture around the world has greatly raised Santa's profile, and it has, he's still a highly regional character.

I typed 'famous fictional characters' into Google after the first six, and just chose from there.

I considered him, but cut him for Homer Simpson.

did you mean for this poll to be worldwide or just the US? Even in just the US I think homer simpson would struggle to make the top 50

This can add some discussion

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_highest-grossing_media_franchises

However, while franchises like Pokemon may be well known the sheer number of characters probably dilutes its strength. Though I imagine Pikachu would be up there as a standalone character.

isn't popeye up there?

I feel like all arguments from this topic considered, the top tier is Mickey and Mario, and that I don't think people are giving Mario due respect in here. I initially voted Santa but realise now that may have been flawed. Ended up doing some research online and finding out that Spiderman seems to be much more internationally recognised than the other major superheroes and think he's a stronger contended than this poll shows. and then there's Sherlock Holmes whose stories have been translated into nearly every language both in books and multiple adaptations over on screen.

I'd also enter for consideration Pikachu

I went with Mickey Mouse, since he's been consistently famous/iconic for the longest, aside from Santa, but I am unsure how well known Santa is to people that don't celebrate Christmas or live in a country that do.

I doubt it's Mario, unless we're restricting this by age. There's large swathes of the elderly that won't know who he is.

Pikachu is a good one. I was basically choosing characters based on how likely an 80-year-old is to at least recognize them.

I disagree with this. Mario's almost 40 years old, at this point. Today's elderly likely had kids, and definitely grandkids, who are aware of him, and thus would become aware themselves. I think that argument could have been made 20-30 years ago, but less so today.

I have been informed by this list that Fortnite as a franchise is higher grossing than Superman, as a franchise, all-time, in the entire world, and now that I'm cursed with knowing this I have to curse others with knowing this too

To be fair that page doesn't take inflation into account so I imagine franchises that were really popular 40+ years ago will take a hit.

Just thinking about my mother who does not speak English, she would recognize Santa and Homer (as just "Simpson" probably). Maaybe Mickey. Don't think she'll know anyone else on this list. She also knows pikachu and that would be my guess. I'm assuming there are millions of non-english speakers in the same boat.

Tom & Jerry is more recognizable than half the options in the poll (lol Homer Simpson) and also Santa should not have even been a option for various reasons.

The winner is definitely Mickey Mouse.

Pikachu should easily have been a option. Everybody and their mother knows what a Pikachu is. Some who don't even know Pokemon, knows Pikachu but everybody who knows Pokemon instantly knows what a Pikachu is.
