'Don't Weigh Me' cards aim to reduce stress at the doctor's office

More-Love.org says that many people will avoid going to the doctor in order to avoid the stress and anxiety of being weighed.

A body positivity website has created free "Don't Weigh Me" cards for patients who find stepping on the scale at the doctor's office stressful.

The cards, created by California-based More-Love.org, are available for free to individuals, excluding the cost of postage. There is also the option for businesses to purchase the cards, at $35 per 100 cards.

The cards read: "Please don't weigh me unless it's (really) medically necessary," adding "If you really need my weight, please tell me why so that I can give you my informed consent," as shown in photographs on More-Love.org.

On the other side of the card is a list of reasons why it may not be medically necessary to weigh a patient. "Most health conditions can be addressed without knowing my weight," is one reason, and "I pursue healthy behaviors regardless of my weight status" is another.

A Spanish-language version of the card is also available.

More-Love.org was founded in 2016 by Ginny Jones, according to its website, and describes itself as "an online resource that empowers parents to raise kids who are free from body hate, disordered eating, and eating disorders."

The group supports a "Health at Every Size" philosophy, based around the assumption that "the current practice of linking weight to health using BMI (body mass Iindex) standards is biased and unhelpful."

"Because we live in a fatphobic society, being weighed and talking about weight causes feelings of stress and shame" the website states. "Many people feel anxiety about seeing the doctor, and will avoid going to the doctor in order to avoid the scale."

"We want you to be supported in requesting healthcare that is free of weight bias," the website reads. "The point is that it's an informed choice that we get to make. We don't have to step on the scale just because someone tells us to."

Cards for parents, which ask medical professionals not to talk about their children's weight, are also available.

This is just anti vaxxing under another disguise. Are all fat people unhealthy? No. Are most fat people unhealthy? More than likely yes. Being obese is a marker of underlying health conditions a lot of times.

How to say you're fat fuck without saying you're fat fuck

This is rooted in a legit problem with doctors who are hyper-focused on a patient's obesity and miss/ignore other causes for their problems. Being obese absolutely does cause and exacerbate so many medical conditions that it's understandable to look at that first, and doctors should be able to have an honest conversation with their patients but alas, here we are. I think it's fair for a patient to be able to have some say in this if they don't feel comfortable.

Of course, the HAES cultists have to take it to extremes and just outright ignore/deny the important role weighing a patient plays in the process and try to micromanage doctors and the entire visit. They want to live in a fantasy where being fat has no downsides and it's just sad.

I get that there's a concept known as broken arm syndrome -it's where doctors ignore obvious problems and instead focus on the weight of the person as the source of all their problems, and it's been used to dismiss listening to patients even though they did in fact have a broken arm or whatever from an accident unrelated to their weight- but the wording of this makes it seem mostly like well. Antivaxxer rhetoric.

You're not too far off. HAES and body positivity crowd is straight up in bed with pseudoscience and science denial these days. I admittedly fell for their scam some years back and ended up in the worst shape of my life. Only upside to the experience is that it finally led to me losing a substantial amount of weight and getting healthy for the first time in my life.

I hate to break it to fat people but even if the doctor doesnt weigh you he or she will be able to tell if you are overweight by freaking looking at you.

The point isn't to hide being fat from the doctor but to avoid making it the focus of the visit, especially if it's not necessary.

You just reminded me. As a teen, I went to see this doctor and their scale was broken. So, it made it seem like I lost 20 pounds in a short period of time. While any sane person should of been able to notice the difference of someone that weighs 130 and 110 immediately. He wouldn't accept that his scale was broken and kept prying at it. I never felt like saying "Fuck this dude" and walking out more in my life. When I got out to the car, I just told my ma I never wanted to see that guy again. I was there for stomach issues, I think. We never got past him believing I was the one wrong about the scale. It's insane someone can get that far in life while being that stupid and obnoxious
