They're both good so I don't think there should be a debate at all.

Metallica

They've survived the Nu-Metal wave, still thrive amid the HipHop generation, and technically speaking.... Have had a longer run than The Beatles, if I'm not mistaken. They probably have just as many classics. Their lineup has changed a bit over the years, so that's a strike against them. Given the evolution from trash to hair to rock and beyond, id put them on par at least. The Beatles got popular as a boyband, tbh, but Metallica instantly started evolving from their 2nd album onward. On the other hand, The Beatles has a little more fluff & stuff with lore & cartoons. I'm thinking it's comparable if not parallel.

Nah, Beatles heard Pet Sounds and were like "we're gonna top that" and then they just did... and then they kept getting better.

I guess I agree about Sgt Peppers. Pet Sounds is pretty amazing though. When was it recorded? '66? They used new recording technology that was cutting edge, which is why it sounds like a much later album.

Also if you a music theory nerd or chorus singer there is some interesting harmonies and musical ideas going on that you would appreciate

Is fine. More than fine, tbh.

One. Nothing Else Matters. These are not bad songs.

That being said.... Thrash is trash. You caught me. Lol

You cant seriously be informed of the Beatles discography and make this claim, so Im going to assume youre just being ignorant on the matter. This is a laughably bad comparison.

Pet Sounds

I understand that Pet Sounds was originally disliked by hard fans of The Beach Boys.

Like they sold out and was trying to be like The Beatles.

Now it's considered one of the best albums ever made.

@Xethuminra

The Beatles started their careers by covering other artists and writing music that fit in with other pop music from the early 60s. After becoming the most popular band in the world, they began experimenting with new instruments, recording techniques, and song structures. Whether you like or dislike the Beatles, they objectively influenced the music industry and culture throughout their years together primarily because they were willing to evolve and take risks.

Metallica only progressed in a positive way from Kill Em All to And Justice For All, and I mean in terms of their song writing exclusively (the production on AJFA is awful, for example. Completely inferior to their first 3 records). Also theres only so much you can evolve on within the scope of thrash metal, so theres not going to be alot of observable evolution between those 4 records relative to, say, the Beatles White Album through Let It Be.

And then theres Metallicas Black Album: a stripped down, simplified version of Metallica that would appeal to a mainstream audience. Some would call this a regression, not evolution. But I digress. Then theres Load and Re-Load. I guess if you want to call a thrash band playing southern rock an evolution, be my guest. But I would simply call this a change in genres for the band.

Im too lazy to get into St. Anger and beyond, but hopefully you understand the point Im trying to make.

Yeah, I call that evolution.

Metallica tells stories. Southern Hard Rock is perfect for that. Neither band had the consistentcy of Queen. There's a lot of junk and filler mixed in with with the hits and singles. While you are hitting a familiar note by bashing Load & Reload, you're actually going against the grain. Those songs got just as much playtime as any Beatles song on EVERY rock station in the nation. The Memory Remains is beautiful and unique. It's extremely powerful. Metallica also has a slew of covers, Whiskey In The Jar, Turn The Page, etc.

They were always more technical grunge than trash anyway. Esp after Kill Em All. mean, do we judge Pantera by their hair metal days?

It's not a perfect comparison but that's the best I had offhand. Feel free to make a better one.

Michael Jackson, perhaps

Honestly I've never listened to St Anger in full. Death Magnetic & Hardwired To Self-Destruct are fine tho. DeathM has a number of hits that never drew popularity simply because they're a metal star band playing in an age where metal is dead lol. Hardwired is a thrashy remix of all the stuff we love about them. I mean, have you listened to it? It's good. But, like a lot of music, it takes some getting used to. Blasting through the album and dismissing it? I hope not! ;)

#try,tryagain

PS
~ Help me, Mary. They got me writing rock reviews. On one hand, I'm an old metal head coming out of the wetworks to play. On the other front? I'm trying to fight for all the folks who loved Metroid in the 80's. What a world.

The Beatles also aged better. I remember when The Beach Boys guest starred on Full House and I thought it was creepy af that these old men were singing about school spirit and checking out the ladies on the beach. And that was like '88 lol. It's even worse now.

Brian Wilson turned the Beach Nerds into what they were so its not quite exactly the same and I think most people consider the legacy of The Beach Men to the same degree as The Chad Beatles only because of the nod The Beatles made towards Pet Sounds. Consider that The Beatles were the first band to really be able to write pop tunes and completely step away from that formula to write even better tunes that the masses still came to know and love. Nevermind the fact that they stopped touring all together and were still able to continue on garnering attention and love from their fans.

I dont think theres been a band that has come anywhere near what The Beatles were doing in terms of their growth cycle or use of technology.. most people say it was Brian Wilson who did that but ehh.. Brian Wilson didnt add a scripted piano piece from a machine like The Beatles did in In My Life nor did The Beach Chuds ever reach the amount of variety The Beatles did.

The fact the band split up and 3 of them were still able to write landmark albums (sorry Ringo) is a testament to their legacy and writing creatives

The Beatles have a greater quantity of incredible music but I prefer Pet Sounds as a work over any Beatles album, and I can only think of one Beatles album I prefer over Smiley Smile too.
