When I am ask how much does something hurt when I am at the doctor/trainer I always over shoot due to this. So like if my pain level is a 5 I tell the doc that is a 9. Unless I have black doctor then I am honest.

I haven't clicked on the link, but iirc, doctors are less likely to respond to Black people's claims of pain than others

Well known in the medical profession that many of us dismiss the pain claims of black people, for whatever reason, sadly. Even in the younger generations who are constantly reminded and told not to.

Specifically, this work reveals that a substantial number of white laypeople and medical students and residents hold false beliefs about biological differences between blacks and whites and demonstrates that these beliefs predict racial bias in pain perception and treatment recommendation accuracy.

More than a century ago, there were doctors who advocated the practice of Black people dodging baseballs at carnivals on the grounds that they supposedly had thicker bones and fewer pain receptors.

It's sad to see that there are people in the medical profession today who still believe such myths. Last time I checked, melanin didn't provide any additional padding.

Though it is well-known that doctors are less likely to prescribe pain medication to Black patients.

This is what we get for not brutalizing the fuck out of racism in our culture.

Not that the status quo ever wanted to do anything about racism, just, this is the result of it.

i mean doctors should probably know better but considering men have thicker skin than women the misconception itself really isn't as absurd as you're making it out to be

unless men are part rhinos

I was toying with making that joke myself, lol.

This is some serious bullshit. It's always depressing thinking about how theoretically smart people can also buy into racism, literally the dumbest thing ever. Adults aren't supposed to think minor visual differences change things completely, they were supposed to have to learn that sort of shit in kindergarten right there with object permanence.

Yeah, should have clarified that. It's from the data table saying "Blacks skin is thicker than whites with 25% of residents saying "yes, they agree with that". 14% also think that "Blacks age more slowly than whites" which is really weird too.

Racial bias in the health care system has unfortunately been documented before, so this isn't surprising. It's no wonder there's a wariness within the black community. There's anecdotal and statistical evidence.

I had to see a specialist one time and in the examination room was a picture of the doctor standing with both Reagan and Bush.

I looked up at the picture of the smiling trio and just thought to myself, "I'm dead".

That one just on my experiences seems true just as far as physical looks go. I know it's not an absolute of course but it's common enough if I see a black guy with gray hair I assume he's pretty darn old. Mostly men come to think of it. Perhaps cause from what I've seen at least in groups my age and up they are more prone to using products on their skin than a white man. Idk drunken speculation that they just perhaps take better care of their skin on average.

Otherwise I know better cause I've heard em bitch and moan about aches pains and other medical issues just like everyone else.

On topic. This sounds like some bs they are spinning cause they probably think blacks are just trying to get some pain meds to get high on.

Off topic reminds me when I got irritated at a nurse when I was with a inmate at the hospital. He asked for pain medication and said his pain level was a 6. She told him in a trying to help him out kinda way that he needed to say 7. She went ahead and got it for him anyways. Then next time he said 6 again but then corrected himself qnd said he meant 7. Having worked around this guy I knew he liked to get high. He had chemicle burns on his dick though so I kept my mouth shut.

They have crazy high maternal mortality, IIRC. Like, way higher than white women. Which makes me super worried when my black friends and coworkers are trying to get pregnant or are pregnant.

If it tells you anything, even as a white (technically half-Chinese but you can't tell) female physician, anytime I go to a physician for my own medical problems, it's always assumed to be psychologic. Even though I'm a f****** INTJ emotionless asswipe (and a doctor)

Correct. It has to do with lighting. It's why body builders tan, or fake tan. The darker color draws the eye towards the highlights that the definition of the muscles creates against the skin.
