.hack//sign still did the "trapped in another world" thing the best. It's a shame the show itself is much more dialogue and character driven compared to more modern incarnations like SAO, leading to too many people dropping it for being "boring."

The novels are pretty enjoyable. The anime, with its middlig CGI stuff, is overrated a bit.

If you like good isekais, try reading Jin. It's about a Japanese neurosurgeon who falls down the stairs and somehow winds up in the feudal era. He applies modern medicine to problems back then and it's pretty great.

I haven't watched the super popular ones yet, but I've liked Cautious Hero and Rising of Shield Hero so far.

  • Overlord is alright if not a little slow, but I guess that's supposed to be world building that I'm all going to forget and have to watch the show again for when the next season comes out...
  • No Game No Life: Was good, but too much fan service for me at times and where the fuck is season two
  • Saga Of Tanya the Evil: I kinda just watched it because I didn't have anything better to do
  • Fruit of Evolution: It's shit
  • Killing Slimes for 300 years and Maxed out my Level: It was fun, dunno why I watched it but I did
Also, there's a lot of shit I'm not watching because I've mostly been sticking to Crunchyroll and haven't really delved into Funimation titles

Danmachi isn't an Isekai but I just like fantasy with swords/magic but I'd put that near the top too

Cautious Hero and that masked wrestler one are entertaining for a more fun lighthearted premise. That spider one is also more of a guilty pleasure, but I still liked it.

RE:Zero is legit good because Subaru is so heavily flawed and comes across as a full character with strengths and flaws. Him confronting those flaws and getting his teeth get kicked in by them is great.

Jobless reincarnation has a lot of similarities to RE: Zero in the flawed character aspects, but it's overall just a fun adventure story.

I don't like Isekai because they're mostly really lazy storytelling. The 'normal dude is in high fantasy' thing is a huge writing crutch because it lets the author avoid having to do intelligent worldbuilding or subtle cues to the audience because everything can be justifiably infodumped to the protagonist. It also lets the author skip on creating an interesting life history for the character and their place in the world because they have zero history with it. And they don't need any clever reason that the protagonist may be powerful because they're already alien to that world so when they break the 'rules' or have completely different power scaling, it's because they're alien.

And then with all that stuff that typically needs to be developed in a fantasy story discarded, isekais still typically fill its place with awful sex pandering and wish fulfillment stuff

That's a fair criticism of a lot of material. I wonder, though, if it can be done well. Poor worldbuilding doesn't seem to be implicit to the genre because we have examples of isekai with developed worlds and dynamic characters. There is also plenty of poor writing and worldbuilding outside of the genre.

Do we really have those examples? How many of those involve crop rotation?

The whole thing with isekai is as a setup to that bland wish fulfillment nonsense. That's the genre. Things that manage to do well with the "other world" part are an exception.
