They should've eased up after the game was out of hand, sounds like they were intentionally running up the score. At around 54-4, my team would've been dribbling out the clock so we can get out of there.

In the NBA, with a score like that, teams will play their 2nd/3rd stringers and dribble out the last possession. So they ease up even on a professional level. It's a sportsmanship thing.

There is no mercy rule. The game is called off only when a team doesnt have enough players to continue, or the physical well-being of the players is in jeopardy. Prep baseball/softball is the closest youll get to a no contest rule where if one team is winning by so many runs before a certain inning the umpire will call the game. And this is done because unless the other team can get three outs the innings will go on indefinitely.

Lol I know all of these provisions already. My point is that officials cant call the game off because one side is no contest. And the article doesnt mention if running clock was used or not. Sounds like the losing school got a serious case of the butthurt and is trying to hang the winning coach in a bad light, when in reality he was trying to slow the bleeding by shooting 3s. His opponent should have had enough sense to come out of the box and cover the shooters. If Im coaching football and running up the middle with my backups the whole second half because its 50-0 and the other team still cant stop it because theyre intent on staying in their same defensive schemethats on them.

It would be good to sub in their other players to let them get more experience playing, but get the fuck outta here with the sportsmanship shit. Good sportsmanship is playing to the best of your abilities, not easing up just because the other team is doing worse. They dribble it out in the NBA when they're ahead because it's easier to keep the other team from scoring and coming back than if they were too aggressive.

I dont really know what the situation was here. If the coach was keeping the best players and risking them getting injured while obliterating the other team, that would be bad. If those folks were swapped out and the team continued winning hard, then thats just how it is and the fault is on the other team for sucking too much.

Its fun to see all the rightwingers upset over this on twitter. The suspension is more than fair. I hope the other team at least got some participation trophies and a pizza party after the game.

Yeah its crazy. Some of these kids are just playing to have fun. You lose games it happens but the idea of these sports is for the kids to have fun and learn sportsmanship.

Im not into sportsball, so maybe I just dont get it, but itd be bad sportsmanship to me if I could tell my opponent went easy just because I suck. Like they dont even respect me enough to try.

that's dumb. First of all, the dude who coaches the team is probably like a math teacher or something just doing it in his spare time. Secondly, I'm sure the school that lost isn't a school that is known for athletics. Thirdly, if you're a coach and your team is up by 60 at the half and the opposing team hasn't scored you should know to reign it in. They were up 29-0 at the end of the first. There's no need to press.

And yes these coaches are supposed to win but they are also there to make sure the kids learn valuable lessons. Its bad sportsmanship to do what he did.

If I was gettin stomped that bad and suddenly started doing better for no clearly discernible reason, I'd just be pissed. It's a bigger dick move to order them to ease up tbh.

I remember back in the 80s, when I was in kindergarden, I would play 2-player Dr. Mario with my dad. And sometimes my dad would soundly beat stupid child me. And sometimes I would end up crying because I lost. Now imagine this situation with a kindergardener being applied to high school basketball.

I would love to know what defensive scheme you suggest when youre losing by hundreds of points?

Because clearly its not happening due to the fact that one team is massively superior to the other.

2-3 zone and staying in the shooters face, not to mention getting the damn rebound on missed shots because I doubt they were shooting 100% from the field even if unpressured. And if the other team wont sit on the ball, then YOU do it. There are ways to stop the bleeding yourself.

That's still assuming the other team was actually skilled or motivated enough to... Well, accomplish any of this. If there's a big skill gap and an enormous point gap the drive to continue the game kinda leaves too.

There was a high schools girls game the other day here that was 105-5 and nothing like this happened.

How? The 2-3 and 3-2 defend against field shooters. They go back to driving inside then you go 1-3-1. They obviously didnt have the athletes to go man. Theres no cookie cutter zone defense that defends everything, you just have to be flexible. Just like football, if you go in with one alignment and one coverage youre going to get smoked by anyone with a pulse.

Whats nonsense is people wanting to punish high school coaches for winning. That everyone is special crap is over once you get out of the kiddie leagues. HS athletics are about life lessons, one of which is how to deal with getting your ass beat because its going to happen again in the real world. Theyre crippling these kids.
