Yup, that's about when I remember the experts saying it's a matter of when not if covid becomes a global pandemic.

I think some of you forget how uninformed and stupid a lot people were then. As I said, I remember Dr Drew making TV appearances saying the flu was way worse. I even remember people here thinking America wouldn't have it as bad as Italy because they kiss each other on the cheek. There was a lot of denial going around either from stupidity or being uninformed.

My coworkers were predicting it months early. It was them saying "We had a pandemic in 1920, 1820, 1720..." Etc. They kept insisting that a global pandemic would hit in 2020 since history repeats.

Some of them are big time conspiracy theorists and pretty gullible. But then it happened, so, yeah. They were right about one, and it ended up worse than I could've imagined at the time.

the worst part is that because we'd fucked over relations with china to the point we had completely withdrawn our own watchdog groups that keep track of emerging diseases there we ended up blind. we had to rely on backchannel reports from doctors in china reporting to out of country labs, doctors that were afraid to report because their own country was cracking down on the news. had we kept our own experts there we'd have completely avoided china's regressive propoganda machine and their undying urge to keep their own population ignorant.

well, that and the fact that many governments around the world are/were headed by fucking morons willing to let their people die as long as it kept them looking good.
