I made a list in another topic so I'm just going to copy and paste it in here. Although most of this might not make sense until you learn the battle system and the general structure of the game more. The main things you should know before you start is hard mode is actually hard so it's recommended you start on normal, and pick either a strength or magic build for your main character. After you learn a little more the stuff below will make more sense.

The main thing to know is that SMT is generally considered a hard game, where the first encounters can whip you out (the tutorial fight in SMT4 could kill you if it get's lucky). The game starts hard, but it will get easier as you go and get more familiar with the systems. It still remains a decent challenge the whole time.

About building your main character, you should stick to either a strength or magic build. Every point should go into strength or magic, maybe a little in vitality for defense. Hybrids are fine, but you'll do much better sticking to one. The battle system is all about hitting weaknesses or criticals (you get extra turns), so with magic you'd get a bunch of different elements, while with strength you load up on multihit and high crit rate moves. I did a strength build and I didn't have many problems.

I hope you aren't big into story, because SMT is very much a gameplay over story series. Persona is where you go for the story.

Use spyglasses on the mitama enemies to figure out their weakness and hit it before they run away.

Recruit every demon, even if it's one you might not want. The more demons you have, the easier it will be to fuse the good ones. The conversations during recruitment is random, so don't think too hard on them. But still do it even if your too low a level or don't have space. They'll take your stuff and leave, but next time you encounter them with space/high level, they'll instantly join.

Your priority when using your glory points is always skill slots for your demons and main character, no exception.

Remember you can change your main characters resistances anytime as long as you have a demon essence (which you'll have a ton). If a boss is giving you problems with their fire attacks, switch to have fire resistance. If your main character dies it's game over and you go back to your last save. Protecting your main character is important. Also remember that defending prevents your weakness and doesn't crit.

In SMT, buffs and debuffs make a big difference, don't ignore them.

Don't be stingy with fusing demons. Everything in your party is going to eventually start being under leveled and useless, get rid of it even if you had good memories.

The "everything is always a crit" magatsuhi you start the game with is the best one. It makes every hit a crit which is a guaranteed 8 turns. Since everything is a crit and your guaranteed an extra turn, you can use that demons most powerful attack even if it's not hitting a weakness like one of their other skills might. The enemy can also use this magatsuhi too, when it says they're charging, either have everyone defend or kill them that round. Guaranteed crits by the enemy is almost certain death if you just let it happen, defending stops them from critting.

This is helpful for me too. I am currently leveling up for the first proper boss, who wiped his ass with me. I played SMTIV back in the day, and this either seems harder or I simply forgot how to play hard turn based games.

Yup, the compendium. In SMT all the demons you have, along with their exact levels/stats/moves are saved in the compendium. You can spend (a lot) of money at any time to bring them back at any point. So if you fused a good demon but you want the original back, you can spend a ton of money to bring them back.

There's a reason why people sometimes call SMT Pokemon, but demons.

Keep your supply of all the elemental dampeners stocked up. Make sure you learn what bosses do after they "gather magatsuhi," and stop that move dead. Anything that hits on that next turn will crit, and you're very liable to be wiped. Best to neutralize it if you can, and dampeners are great for it, especially early on.

Bosses are WAY more spongey than they've ever been. Do NOT try to blitz them, and do NOT go for ballsy power plays. Their little sliver of health is ALWAYS more than you expected. SMTV boss battles are a slow game; the safe move is almost always the better option.

Once you get the ability to do Essence fusion, get rid of the MC's Dark weakness ASAP. If Light or Dark moves strike a weakness, then they have a chance of instakilling the target, and if they hit a MC's weakness to it, then that could be an automatic Game Over.

Get the Magatama that Nulls Force.
Level up enough to fuse Ame-no-Uzume, who has Media and Nulls Force..
Get Nozuchi, who Drains Force.
make sure your fourth Demon is not weak to Force.

After that, it should be fairly simple to take him down.

Also level to 17 and get Ame-no-Uzume for her Force null and high MAG stat she starts with Media.

I was fucking around recently and found out. Left a Dark Weakness on was fine for almost a whole playthrough. Suddenly two Dark attacks in a row, first hit killed me but I had endure, second hit killed me again and then it was Game Over man.

I'll have to look into the magatamas those are from.

I'm also in an annoying situation where all the fusions I can do are higher level than my character. I do have a severe lack of buff/debuff skills though. As an aside, should I grind to Tornado?

Hell, Nozuchi works well enough(also nulls Force), and you can pick those things up in the hallway right before Matador. Nekomata is even better.

It's Hifumi, which is at the shop in the Ginza Underpass, which is right before the Matador fight.

And Tornado is fine, though not for the Matador fight. Definitely something to use on the MC afterwards, though. I kept it around until I had access to Wind Cutter late in the game.

It's pretty much the bog standard SMT opening.

Some public area is closed off by the cops, nobody knows why, rumors of people getting eaten by monsters or some shit.

Then the plot starts. Almost as uniform as Professor Tree letting you pick one of three pokemon.

hit the enemy's weakness
defend when the enemy's charging up power
fuse to get better demons
use buffs and debuffs

this is all basic advice but you'd be surprised how often people don't take it and then blame the game for being unfair or something

Is there any reason to hang on to the relics I find? Just sell them off?

I feel like the macca I'm getting from fights barely covers the cost of healing at save points.

Relics are just for selling, they're your main source of money. Eventually you'll be getting tons of relics at higher values and the cost of healing at save points will be pennies to you.

ailments are really good now except for like two bosses in the whole game
there are some skills that deal bonus damage when the enemy has a certain ailment, and they're among the strongest skills in the game and are obtained relatively early for their power

they're particularly effective against randoms and most optional bosses

DarkBuster22904 posted...

no they're not. unless you're underlevelled (the game has a severe level scaling penalty) or you're not using the right elements/demons with good proficiencies bosses shouldn't take that long except for maybe the first nuwa fight and maybe the second lahmu fight, but this is smt so press turn is so easy to abuse to double turn economy and dramatically increase your damage

bestial bite in particular carries really hard early on for physical attackers and venom chaser is among the strongest skills in the game and you get it at level 20
