Mario 64 pushed the envelope in a lot of ways. Remember how koopas, a common enemy in previous games, were rare and the shell became a surfboard for Mario to ride on?

guarantee they were just throwing shit at the wall and had some sub asset one of the devs made. there's nearly no artistic cohesion in mario 64 levels, and i frankly think the game aged like shit beyond mario's genuinely good, intuitive movement.

I can excuse the flying pirate ships but I draw the line at a submarine.

Kinda sad they didn't do anything with the submarine. I always copied a file when I got to that stage because the sub never comes back after you've completed it.

That's the brilliance of Mario. They created a setting in which a plumber against a tyrant turtle monster was a logical extension of the world they had created. In Mario Bros., Mario battled creepy-crawlies in the sewers consisting of turtles, crabs, and fighter flies. In Super Mario Bros., the turtles had an entire army led by a monster turtle king.

The submarine doesn't quite feel like a natural extension of anything introduced up until that point. It is still a neat visual though.

Would it be too lame to suggest Bowser himself didn't actually use it, it just had his branding on it and it was for koopa minions to assist the other water enemies with underwater missions or whatever?

nah, i think it's more like a game of telephone. that's really what levels from these days come off as. someone wrote the ideas for the levels, probably with some vague plot, but it was all scraped aside once it got to the level designers, and the artists, and so on and so on. everyone adding and removing and combining things in order to get things more orderly.

it's more likely that they combined ideas into one, where a 'sub level' meant more at first but they decided to rope together ideas because it made for a more cohesive game path.
