So I'm not talking about any one religion here. Nor am I gonna vouch for any religion here either because I want a neutral discussion.

But those of you who don't believe in any religion at all, don't you ever think that some crazy shit is going on behind the scenes that is unfathomable? Not saying "that's evidence religion is real!" but it seems weird to me to believe that this all came from nothing and that all of this is just some cosmic coincidence.

Obviously some people believe in religion because they don't want to believe that their life is worth nothing. I get that angle. But at the same time, our existence alone is already a trip. Existing in itself is already crazy to me.

It's actually crazier to believe that nothing at all is at play in my opinion.

Not at all. I find the idea that all of this, and I mean all of this, simply being happenstance is incredibly romantic. It makes the possibilities functionally infinite. It means that not only does nothing I do matter, but also everything I do matters.

There are many folk who believe we are essentially cosmic coincidence. There are a myriad of reasons why folks believe in nothing. Although are you grouping atheists in or not? Some had bad experiences with the religion they were brought up in. Some just come to conclusion religion is myth. Not believing in religion, a god etc does not mean you believe in nothing, you do believe in something and thats god is not real and religion is a myth.

If they believe in nothing then anything can fill that void. There is a belief system they have and its absent a god or religion.

To believe in something it requires having some kind of substantial form I can relate to. And that leads me to religion, which is dogmatic and stupid and based on books that presumably insane people wrote thousands of years ago.

So I'm open to the idea of some kind of spiritual whatever, but since that idea is so abstract I can't believe in it.

I believe in empiricism.

Why make shit up when at this point, we have fairly plausible explanations for why and how the world came to be that dont require some kind of demiurge?

Doesn't seem weird to me at all when you also remember that there were infinite chances over billions of years for this to happen. And life as we know it didn't just suddenly pop into existence, it evolved into what we know over millions of years. That's plenty of time to adapt to the surroundings and eventually evolve into humans.

Of course that's if you believe in evolution, which you should.

there's obviously more stuff out there than we understand. I just don't see the point in "believing". I'm pretty confident all earthly religions are made up by humans trying to explain existence

I consider myself an agnostic atheist

This really. There's no need for there to be intelligence behind the universe in order for there to be meaning.

You think it's more likely that some cosmic being was just always around and suddenly decided one day to make the world? That's kinda crazy if you think about it.

I just think we don't know what started it yet, so I avoid jumping to conclusions, which is what religion is.

If the universe is as big as our scientists say then it's become highly likely that we came into existence by pure chance.

We are not at the center of the universe and we are just chemicals firing in our brains and our bodies, a shell of matter.

If humanity is the best the entire universe has to offer then that's pretty sad tbh. Either way I'll never know what being/event created us for sure, so I don't care.

I'm not saying it's not crazy. But existence itself is already crazy to me, so the lack of something crazy happening is truly crazy to me, if you get my drift crazy G.

Lack of crazy? Everything is crazy.

I'm holding in my left hand a knit hat with the Homestar Runner logo on it.

Not only am I holding an object created by our species, it's an object that is necessary because, despite us being the dominant species, we evolved away from protection from the elements and have to fashion our own protection.

And in this case, I've purchased one based on the idea of a series of web cartoons about goofy characters that spoke to me as a man in his 20s and continues to speak to me to this day. To the point where I'd essentially advertise for them. On my hat.

What's not crazy about that? :)

So many things in this life are crazy if you take the time to think about them.
