it would be dumb to have another sequel. the open-ended ending works way better.

While I do wish we got to see more Trinity in Resurrections, I dont think there should be anymore sequels, especially if theyre expecting them to be in the theaters

I enjoyed it a lot. Some of it was confusing and messy, but the action stuff and the final 10 mins or so was all really great. I loved seeing Trinity back, just wish she was in more of it

I enjoyed it, but don't see too much potential for a sequel from the story. If they manage to come up with one though, I'd give it a chance.

I think that released after the current lockdown started. So no way for me too have seen it or formed any opinions about it.

I don't think the new Matrix movie was warranted in and of itself.

the ending was super fucking abrupt and stupid that it kind of ruined the whole movie

everything leading up to the climax at the bank was fantastic

then the end happened

I doubt it. I don't know how much WB spent on advertising, but it felt like it dried up pretty quickly after release.

I have to wonder if any of the executives actually watched (read: understood) the movie, as one of the meta subplots was on the making of the film series as a whole; there is a line in the film where they are talking about the new Matrix game they are producing, that seems a direct comment from Lana about how they are going to take the opportunity the studio is giving them and just run as far as they can with it (I'd have to watch it again to get it verbatim) It seems like the studio wanted to milk the franchise with a fourth movie that no on wanted but Lana saw the opportunity not only to tell several meta stories within the parable of the Matrix, but to get her foot back in the door.

I think it was brilliant and would love to see another, but I don't see the studio forking over any money just to get roasted the way they did in this one.

matrix is probably the one series that can actually get away with meta and fourthwall jokes tbh

because that's pretty much what the entire universe is built around

The usual rule of thumb is that marketing costs are about the same as production costs.

So if a movie cost $190 million to make (which this film did), it needs to earn back about $380 million to break even (which this movie very much did not).

It didn't even make back its production cost in box office returns, which makes it a full-on bomb. Yes, there are mitigating factors (ie, the pandemic limiting theatrical release, and simultaneous streaming diverting potential audience to alternative platforms), but by old standards this film was a catastrophic failure. It could be redeemed if WarnerMedia has hard data to imply that it helped spur a strong rush of new subscriptions to HBO Max, or if it does phenomenally well via DVD sales or On Demand rentals, but odds are this is going down in the books as an unmitigated failure.

The thing is though, failure doesn't actually mean they won't invest in another sequel. The Matrix franchise is a proven IP that has succeeded in the past, and there will always be interest in finding new ways to exploit it as long as Warner holds the rights to it. If anything, we're likely to just get a new soft reboot or other sequel without the Wachowskis involved at all, as Warner will just blame them (and the pandemic) for this failure. And then we'll get a "safer" sequel with more audience pandering.

They wouldn't even remotely care how much the movie craps on them or outright implies the movie shouldn't have been made in the first place and was only happening because soulless corporate execs wanted to churn out another installment to make money. The only think that actually matters is whether or not the film does make money.
