By the way, for my wife's company, they're giving her, at 100% pay:
  • 2 weeks of administrative time off prior to short term disability kicking in
  • 6 weeks of short term disability (for natural non-complicated birth)
  • 4 weeks of parental leave to be used whenever within first year of birth
So she gets 12 weeks off. /jealous

i would only save this option as a last resort.

co-worker sounds like a massive asshole the mother needs help in areas since they need time to recover after delivery.

areas being taking care of the baby and other needs.

i would ignore him and keep things "work related only".

Unless you're taking it during the crunch time of a project when most hands are needed on deck, then it shouldn't affect your promotion aspects too much.
