Its not the same as an in-engine cutscene, all MGSV cutscenes are in-engine but the game has the good grace to let you skip them (not talking about the helicopter rides because that's hiding loading).

But invariably you can never skip game segments where you have to hold forward on the control stick as your character painstakingly shuffles through a hallway or conspicuously linear outdoor area while they talk with someone else. And the thing is when a game hits you with that early on you know there's gonna be much more of it too.

Also, damn, I've started to notice how much I still negatively compare other games released today with MGSV. I remember binging that game on release but that was almost 7 years ago now, and that game STILL feels like a next gen title in terms of presentation and gameplay that other companies are struggling to catch up with

It gets better but still sucks for things like you can't run while in camp. You have to go out of your way to unlock fast travel and even then it's very limited. Iirc you can fast travel out of camp but not back to it.

But if you could just fast travel all willy nilly you'd miss a lot of entertaining random encounters.

My bigger problem with RDR2 was how it yanks your dick about an honor system and then immediately gives you forced missions where for example you break out a fellow gang member and then literally massacre all the townsfolk of the town where the jail is and Arthur is just like "hmmm was this wrong"

GoW kind of baffles me, there hasn't been a boss since The Stranger in how far I've played but there has been two of the giants and then there's like no enemy variety AT ALL and Kratos isn't nearly mobile enough for dealing with the ranged lobbing enemies to not be annoying. Maybe it's just not a frontloaded game but I never leave it wanting to play more

The annoying thing for me so far is that your horse only hears you in a certain radius. So when I do a mission that sends me into town on a cart and then leaves my ass there, I end up walking back. That's the sort of obnoxious realism that R* likes to add that turns me off.

Well the point of the story is his struggles with the morality of what he does vs his loyalness to what he considers his family since the gang raised him.

So I can see him doing things out of loyalty then in hindsight questioning it.

John Marston bugged me more with his dilemmas with what he was doing when helping side characters.

Edit. I would killed Micah though when you end up shooting up a tow.just to get his guns back

If you mean the first game, I didn't actually notice that. Most of them time he seemed to go with the "lmao sure let's see what happens" mindset.

Hell, there's that one quest where a guy is trying to make an airplane and Marston agrees to help solely because he believes that the dude is just going to walk himself off a cliff.

Sure but I'm talking about the dissonance between gameplay and narrative. Refusing to help a snitch up from a cliff is dishonorable and effects peoples disposition with you but shooting up a town of people and playing watch while your homie goes and puts two in his ex wife's head has no effect because it's a main mission.

The game definitely has an enemy variety problem, yeah. As for the lack of early game bosses, I feel like, on one hand, it's part of that same problem, but also, it's kind of an imitation of the pace of first GoW that had the Hydra boss in the tutorial and then took forever to get to a second one.

Either way, I don't like it.

He whines and complains a lot. That's probably it for me. I didnt like CJ in gta for similar reasons. Like he'll complain that what they are doing is fucked up but still let's himself get roped into it and complain the whole time.

It's been a long time but my more vivid memories of this is the missions with the snake oil salesman and the crazy grave robber

John has a good reason for it though. He doesn't want to do a single damn thing in the game, but his wife and child are being held hostage, so he has to do it anyway.

I know but at times it seems like putting a gun to their head and saying you will help me or I will kill you is a less fucked up thing than what he ends up doing. I know I know that wouldn't make for a good game though.

The end of 2 and the final mission playing as John in 1 is the main reasons I do have some love for his character.

2 is the better game/story but 1 had a more tearjerking ending for me. I mean the end as in John's story. What happens after just is a feel good revenge

Edit. It's weird. Never been a western fan but rdr is some of my favorite games

Problem is that with re-releases of games loading screens get diminished, possibly into nothing. If the developers decide to turn it into a story section to mask the loading, that walking section will always be there.

Not always. RDR2 has you slowly walk down a mountain when you can see your destination.

I'll tolerate it once but let me skip it if I want.

If anyone ever played The Saboteur, you can talk with people who give you missions, but if you hit "skip", your character will just say "Just get to the point!" and the person will say "go to place A and blow up the target". I thought that was neat.
