It's not the return to form of the first three games in terms of story and writing, but it's a huge step up from Sticker Star and Color Splash.

Did you exclusively read reactions from the small percentage of people who weren't happy it wasn't a TTYD sequel or something?

I'm playing this right now and nearing the end! Really really enjoying it, especially the characters and story. The battle system sadly got repetitive pretty fast, but the bosses are always a treat and so different from one another. Glad I got to experience this game after putting it off so long, but can't rate until I beat it. Heard the last chapter is real good. I'm already leaning 7.5 to 8ish.

So far nothing has topped the theater in chapter 2 for me though. Really 10/10 top tier Paper Mario shenanigans right there.

Yeah, Chapter 2 was the best.

Rest of the game was still pretty good though.
